OUR CITY SHOULD BE
CAUTIOUS
There is now a proposition be-
fore the city council to pay many
thousands of dollars of alleged
back indebtedness against the
city These warrants were is
sued upon claims that have been
lost or destroyed It is claimed
that many of them have been
paid but not cancelled An at
tempt was made at one time to
collect a $-1000 warrant the sec-
ond time and who knows but
that a number of the present
warrants are in the same condi-
tion? Every just warrant should
be paid but none of the unjust
ones should be forced upon the
tax payers
It is well remembered how
mysteriously the treasurer’s
books disappeared in the fall of
1908 No sane man believes
these books were burned asclaim-
ed Try burning a common
book up and see what a difficult
task you will have on your hands
The floor to the room in which
the books were claimed to have
been was not hardly scorched
The Democrat is anxious to see
every warrant that is legal paid
but the council should act very
cautiously in this matter and not
pay any that have been paid
once The thing is hot and
should be handled with care or
some one will be burnt Let the
holders of those warrants show
beyond a shadow of doubt they
are genuine and were issued
legally with valid claims behind
them and have never been paid
In that event they should be
paid
Governor Cruce made a most
excellent recommendation to The
legislature when he suggested
that a bill be passed which would
not allow any state afficial to be
a member of the board in control
of the prisons of the state and
the legislature should lose no
time in enacting that recommend-
ation into a law State officials
with the work they have in their
respective offices have no time
to give the state prisons the at-
tention they should receive The

CHARGE
The new School Board took
charge of the school affairs Mon-
day night The new members
composed of C G White R M
Estes J M Echols F M An-
derson and Mr Kellogg met
early Monday morning and took
the oath of office and then met
that night and organized by
electing Mr White as president:
Mr Lumpkin ice-president:
and R M Estes secretary
The new Board refused to ap-
prove the minutes of the last
meeting of the old Board elect-
ing the Superintendent and
teacheas for another term This
will force the election of the en-
tire faculty
Mr Estes has agreeded to
serve as secretary of the Board
without charge thus saving $180
a year to the school fund He
and Mr White are going to Ok-
lahoma City at their own ex-
pense to learn the best methods
of conducting city schools They
will also look after the heating
of the buildings and see if they
can find a way in which they can
save fuel
The new Board is going to put
forth evry effort to give the
people a nine months’ school on
the present levy but if they can-
not the people will be perfectly
willing to vote a special tax to
continue the school nine months

JUST THINK OF IT
A Four Hundred Dollar Upright Par-
lor Grand Piano Absolutely
Given Away
That advertising is now a
science is again demonstrated
practically to the buying public
' of this section by the wonderful
’advertising system now employ-
ed by the most enterprising bus-
iness house of The Star Mercan-
tile Co who are going to give
away absolutely free to someone
of their customers on November
1 1913 the beautiful Upright
Piano sells for four hundred dol-
lars and is a high class instru-
ment in every respect guaran-
teed by the makers for ten years
Just think of it! A four hundred
dollar piano to be given away!
A few years ago if a merchant
was to do such a thing he would
be considered a fit subject for an
asylum but conditions have
changed yet in the face of the
enormous sum spent in advertis-
ing the fact of The Star Mercan-
tile Co giving away a $40000
piano is a stupendous undertak-
ing and it clearly demonstrates
their desire to be “always up to
and a little a head” of the spirit
of the times
Every purchaser of $100 worth
of goods from any department of
their store will receive a coupon
good for 100 votes on the piano
The person presenting the larg-
est number of votes to them on
November 1 1913 will receive
the piano absolutely free No
favors will be shown and every
i person will receive an equal
chance The reputation enjoyed
jby Star Mercantile Co for

I pie will appreciate this extreme-
l ly liberal offer on the part of
Star Mercantile Co and we pre-
dict a lively scramble for votes
The Democrot has joined the
Star Mercantile Co in its Piano
Contest and will give 3000 votes
with each new subscription and j
the same number for all renewals
It will also give 1000 votes j
for each dollar paid pn advertis-
ing or job work It will issue
books containing $5 worth of
due bills which the contestants
can sell and be issued the tickets
The Democrat will handle no
tickets but will give an order
on the Star Mercantile Co for
the required number of votes

ALFALFA BILL MURRAY HEARS
FROM BROTHER
Washington D C April 30-
William II Murray Congress-
mart at large has a brother two
years his senior by the name of
George T Murray whom he has
not seen nor heard from since
1897
During the Inaugural a little
Swode-oY-a-fellow came to “Al-
falfa Bill” in the Statuary Hall
at the Capitol and said “Hello
Murray” whereupon the con-
gressman said “Hello but I
don’t think you know me” and
he asked “Isnt your name
George T Murray?” The reply
was “No but he is or was my
brother” and the stranger re-
plied “I know him he lives at
Barthold North Dakota He is
a very prominent farmer and
one of our best politicians”
The young Swede returned to
North Dakota and “The Ward
County Democrat” of April 3rd
came out with the following
news item:

Own George T
Murray
“It will be interesting to the
many friends of George T Mur-
ray the well known Barthold
farmer to know that “Alfalfa
Bill” Murray Congressman at
large from Oklahoma is his
brother”
“E II Stenvict who attend-
ed the Inauguration of President
Wilson mingled with the powers
that be down at Washington for
a couple of weeks and seeing a
man that looked like George T
Murray’s twin brother asked
who he might be He was told
that he was none other than the
famous “Alfalfa Bill” from Ok-
lahoma who is making such a
success in the Halls of Congress
Mr Stenvick was introduced to
the gentleman from Oklahoma
and they became good friends at
once”
“The Barthold man and his
brother formerly published a

a few years before George came
out to North Dakota- Both

Sulphur District Judge McMillan
passed through Davis yesterday
enroute home The Judge was
tired from 'a month’s hard work
in the court just closed but seen -ed
pleased that he had come
so near clearing the docket He
now has but few cases on the
docket and most of them are
new ones The Judge is being
commended by the County Com-
missioners for the economical
manner in which lie conducted
the court We are informed
that the cost of the court just
adjourned was only about $G00
which is indeed very small com-
pared to the amount of business
transacted Judge McMillan is
a fair and level-headed judge
