his column
very pallonged fever with the ordi-
nary accompaniments of fever fa-
tigue and lassitude
It is something like typhoid fever
especially in that its presence can
be detected by an examination of
the Hood This examination (Ines
not depend on the revelation of the
germs hut on an immune retiction
The immune reaction is a protec-
tive device and is present as long
as the patient lives t with SJIne ex-
ceptions) Intelligent Questions
The questions which wy clergy-
man correspondent asks are quite
intelligent and are the result of a
somewhat contused state of opinion
on the subject at present Ile evi-
dently has been talking to a num-
ber of doctors in order to get an in-
tolligent opinion in order to guide
Ids flock
Ile asks: "Is it the presence of
the germs themselves or their tox-
ins or antibodies in the blood that
show that a person has undulant
fever?"
The germs of undulant fever can-
not be isolated from the blood' ex-
cept by very complicated methods
What happens when the body is
affected is that antibodies which
cause the germs to clump are pro-
duced So the laboratory clinician
takes a drop of blood from a sus-
pected individual and adds the se-
rum to a group of the germs from a
culture If after an hour they are
clumped together it is generally con-
sidered that the patient has or has
had undulant fever Another test
is like the tuberculin test on the
skin Both these tests can be dem-
onstrated a long time after the acute
stage of the disease has disappeared

subject by Dr Angle anti Dr Algie
was 'Made in the school children or
1Vanyas City Kansis They began
hy wondering whether such law
milk consumers as children could
have a chronic form of undulant
xer which had never been severe
eniitigh to result in an acute pros-
tration In about nine per cent they found
that the skin test
pressed by this rather surpriQing
information they decided to
tion parents to ascertain the ot
TE'ntP of chronic complaints in Iticir
children
Symptoms Found
Such eoinpIaint a ecurrom

casional spells of fever and neriee
symptoms Were found very 11 c
quently in those Who had poHtivc
skin tests For instance there
:ft per cent of rheumatic :yinpiole-
in the positives compared to
cent in a group of controls
l'he possibility of chronic uniki
lant infection then was indlcaled
not so much by the positive tes!s
as by the combination of po4itk
test and symptoms
The possibility that many chil-
dren who show NA hat might be called
general bad health really may have
chronic undulant fever is empho-
sized by these studies The posi-
bility gains emphasis when we ro-
member how common the
