MANY a hunter whether he's
now eighteen or eighty-eight
can remember—and at this time
of year usually does remember—
that memorable Christmas so long
ago when he tiptoed down the chil-
ly stairs with the first light of the
holiday morning to find a dream
come true beneath the Christmas
tree The first gun—how it stood
out among the many red and
green short and round packages
stacked and cluttered at the base
of the shining tree wrapped so
carelessly there could be no doubt
that it was what it was hoped to
be
Does one ever forget the sound
of crunching snow beneath new
and shiny boots and the sharp but
unbiting flurry of wind and snow
that whipped through leafless trees
and empty corn stalks? One
doesn't forget—not if this was the
day of the first gun that unfor-
gettable day
On such a day a boy was made
to feel like a man to walk with
pride shoulders back head and
heart up in the sky But then so
much yet a boy for he must stop
now and then to hold a shiny new
410 at arms length just to ad-
mire the solidness and the beauty
of it and then snap it shoulder-
ward with lightning-like speed to
draw a bead on an imaginary tar-
get moving with tremendous
speed across the horizon
There is a place reserved within
the heart of every hunter lie may
live to be a hundred He may seek
his game in the jungle depths
the musty swamps or the desert
wastelands But he all never
see the moment When time dims
the memory of the day of the first
gun

1 REMEMBER"
WI THE OLD Timm:
From Fear' Feters Hamilton
Ohio: I remember when Grandma
was the family doctor (except on
rare occasions) and treated us with
sulphur and molasses calomel
quinine asafetida vermifuge tur-
pentine and sugar poultices and
heated flat irons which were apt
plied to numerous aches and pains
for we had lots of boils and stone
bruises
There were millions of flies and
chiggers a few cow-herding dogs
some family trips to "meetings" at
church Most people rode horse-
back the children "behind" and
all females rode side saddle with
long black skirts to protect clothes
in muddy weather
There was a "walk log" across
the creek and in wintertime we
"young-Ins" crawled up a hill
frozen in ice to get to school Al-
ways in springothere was the bull
tongue plowing on the hillsides and
the double shovel plow for the bot-
toms Hand corn planters dropped 8 or
10 grains to a hill about 4 feet
apart later thinned to three stalks
a hill and hoed by hand Colts were
broken by my uncle and sheep
sheared and the wool cared for by
all There were large garden
patches and year round there were
chickens turkeys geese hogs and
stock to tend wasn't milking
done twice a day? And always
there was wood to get
Today we holler about so much
to do I get carried away remembering!
