Springs NC: The Russian propa-
ganda success with the Sputniks
has revealed that this country has
committed grave errors in the
Images of America which it has
sought to establish abroad by pro-
paganda and informational policy
The high standard of living in
America has been emphasized as
a demonstration of superiority
over the Russian system But the
people of the backward countries
can never hope to attain a small
fraction of what million of Ameri-
cans now enjoy Even in western
Europe America has induced per-
haps unnecessary envy by its em-
phasis on American prosperity
The need which the leaders of
backward countries feel keenly is
that of industrializing as rapidly
as possible They do not believe
that they have the time to indus-
trialize which was given to Ameri-

sons why the Soviet Union has
seemed like a model or example
for various Asian leaders and in-
tellectuals The Russian leaders have been
able to develop Russia industrially
and to produce earth satellites by
sweating and enslaving the Rus-
sian people But in Asia the en-
slavement of Russians and also
of Lithuanians Litvaks and Es

BACKWARD AND FORWARD
T HE words of the caption may
describe the range of man's
thoughts as they reach the close
of one year and look forward to
another
As you come to the end of an-
other year you may look back
with some regrets for things that
ought to have been done and for
things that were left undone And
to regrets for personal failures
may be added the disquieting and
disturbing occurrences in the
world at large
But it would be foolish to give
all attention to things of the past
Many of them are beyond reme-
dying And certainly all of them
have gone beyond recall The Per-
sian poet wrote of the moving
finger of fate that having writ
"nor all thy piety not wit can
lure it back to cancel half a line
or blot out one word of it" So
why take time of the living pres-
ent for thoughts and regrets of
the past?
This much you can learn from
the past that whereas you turned
to the left and became lost you
should and can turn in your jour-
ney to the right to reach the city
