NIKITA KIIIIUSIICIIEV'S pro-
Posal tor total and complete
diarmament with all nations dis-
solving their military establish-
ments and putting their resources
to work in peaceful pursuits is
noble in prospect if not in concept
but hardly practicable in this pre-
sent evil world Until some
vast change comes over the hu-
man mind and spirit until the
ns-Aure of man is changed and in
wholesale proportions we cannot
exrect them to disarm themselves
nor would they stay disarmed if
they did And alas there seems
no hope of any such change as
would he required
TO 'THOSE who perhaps are
wondering why Vice President
Nixon is being left out et the
lirnelizTht during the Khrushehev
visit may we suggest two possibil-
ities: lie and the Red dictator
"mixed it up" so thoroualy on
his own 'isit to Russia and spoke
so pointedly to each other that
Khrushchev may have made one
of the conditions of his coming
here that he not be forced to see
our Veep On the other hand the
Republican party may be pur-
posely keeping Nixon in the back-
ground in deference to other pos-
sible GOP candidates for the presi-
dential nomination Khrushchev
has taken a number of digs at
Nixon since he came here indi-
cating a lack of good feeling to-
ward him And the vice presi-
dent replies that the Soviet leader
is "doing a good job of selling a
-1:oor product" And so e s es
IT IS DIFFICULT to get away
from the Khrushchev tneme thesc
days seeing that the papers mag-
azines radio and television are
Sc) 17e1vi1y occupied with the sub-
ject Ecfore I :Iking leave al-
tw:ether of this absorbing thesis

the Ded dictator at San Francico
Satury night They stood their
:round as no other group has donl:!
with Jr T'v Khrushchev and by their
'yards and actions apparently con-
vinced him that the American la-
bor movement is well satisfied
with capitalism and 'ants no part
of the communist way At the

When Nikita Khrushchcv has
gone home and the dust has set-
tled and the atmosphere cleared
I think we shall find that his
visit here has produced incalcul-
able benefit to the Communist
cause It could not possibly have
been foreseen what an impression
the man himself would make up-
on the American mind
To see the grim-faced Ike
Eisenhower president of these
proud United States—who met the
Red dictator at the airport with
an unsmiling handshake — turn
slowly into a grinning happy-
looking chamber of commerce-
like greeter under the plebian yet
warm and friendly personality of
the Russian was living testimony
to the ability of the man to make
friends and influence people
And it was the same with
others whether high government
officials or hard-bitten cynical
newsmen and television commen-
tators They have all melted un-
der the Khrushchev smile And if
the reader has been watching on
television he has found the whole
thing infectious It is an astound-
ing thing

The Khrushchey Visit: An Appraisal
All of: which makes Nikita
Khrushchev a very dangerous
man indeed For you see his
philosophy comprehends the slow
but sure strangulation of the cap-
italistic concept lie himself point-
ed out at his appearance before
the National Press club that the
ancient fuedal system was sup-
planted by the capitalistic idea
and that he believes capitalism
is now ready to melt before com-
munism And provided his visit
does not produce a stiffening of
the capitalistic spine his words
may well prove to be prophetic
The danger of this man to
America is not that the country
as a whole will swallow his doc-
trine but that a significant num-
ber may find in his disarming
manner and speech reason to look
upon his ideas with less disfavor
and in so doing lay the foundation
for that apathy and unconcern
which will make them an easy
prey should the time come when
the Iled is ready to pounce
It is plain to all discerning
minds as they have watched the
performance of Khrushchev on
television or have heard or read
his words that the man is here
