Nvo promising all-staters--Captain
Dick Smith forward Una
Kenny McLaughlin guard
East Central has up to date a
very good record having lost only
six gall leH in the last five years
They have been the king pins of
t he collegiate loop during that time
Though Dick Smith all-state cap-
tain and forward of the Rangers
hits had slow going so far this sea-
son but is still one of the fastest
forwards in the collegiate loop and
he should beyond doubt strive to
retain his all-state position at for-
ward again this year
His average scoring is around 10
points so far this season
Kenny MeT–aughlin the genial
guard of the Rangers has again hit
his stride and is a likely choice for
(me guard position on the all-state
this season Ills floor work has
been par—and his basket shooting
accurate
Not very many opponents have
outsmarted this Ranger guard to
gain buckets at his expense
Then too two other good boys on
the local squad are Jelly Johnson

New York Feb 16----(AP)---A
mass meeting called by a hugo
trade union an da socialistic dem-
onstration against the Austrian
workmen ended in a bitter free-for-all
fight this afternoon The social-
ists and Ow communists seemed to
be the chief participants
Boos and yells and even flying
chairs filled Madison Square Gar-
den as a group of strategically
placed communists tried to break
up the mass meeting
One man was stabbed in tho
back Three women and nine other
men were beaten with clubs
The general free-for-all threat
ened to become a serious riot when
a communist leaped from the crowd
onto the platform Socialists on the
other part of the platform rushed
the intruder and beat him off As
if this were a signal the Garden
with its 23000 occupants became
alive with combat
The secret passages into the
roomy sewers which honexcomb
the ground under Vienna were
ways of escape for defeated garri-
sons of the municipal apartment
Hocks shelled by government ar-
tillery Tuesday Wednesday and
Thursday
Now the sewers themselves have
become the last stronghold for
theme fighters
Fire From Manholes
Last night socialist riflemeg
emerged from manholes in the
'Stadt-Park district—though it was
officially stated that there had
been no fighting in Vienna since
yesterday noon—and terrified for
eign residents who were kept
awake by the clamor and the gun-
fire as the socialists skirmished
with police
This morning all seemed quick
but the underground army—no ono
knows exactly how large it is—
still was lurking in the sewers
The skirmish in Stadt-Park broke
out before dawn at a point where
the river Wein flows out of a tun-
nel opposite the Kursalon
Residents of this district told
the Associated Press they were
awakened by what sounded like
machine gun fire not more than 100
yards from their windows
More distant explosions to th1
cast they said sounded like hand
grenades — although others who
lost sleep becauso of the uproar in-
sisted they heard light artillery fire
The principal entrances to the
Vienna sewers are little metal huts
resembling kiosks One enters
through a doorway and climbs
down a ladder on the street level
Ventilator openings in the middle
the walls are large enough to
permit pistol firing by men climb-
ing up from the sewer
Manhole covers in the streets al-
so can he lifted and fire can be di-
rected from these
There are tens of thousands of
these manhole openings in Vienna
From an eye witness the Asso-
ciated Press learned that approxi-
mately 20 republican guards par-
ticipated in the Stadt-Park skirm-
ish The socialist fighters emerged
from the seers and began the bat-
tle by attacking police at a sub-
station in the neighborhood it WIN
