FARMER KILLED
BY LIGHTNING
Dave Steinard 33-year-old
farmer was instantly killed
Wednesday of last week when
a bolt of lightning struck him
as he was standing in the en-
trance of a granary on the
Kessner farm two miles north
and one-half east of Coving-
ton He was not found until 8
o'clock Thursday morning
Apparently the lightning
struck the iron track on whichl
the 'granary door slides trav-
eled along it to the corner of
the building down the corner
then back to a lock which
Steinard was bolding in his
hand
When found the was still
holding the lock and key but
his hands and arms were bad-
ly scorched and his skull was
split open so terrific was the
force of the blow It is known
that the tragedy occured at
6:05 o'clock because a watch
he wat carrying was broken
and the hands pointed to that
hour
The funeral services were
held in Covington Sunday af-
ternoon and burial n' ode in
the Covington cemetery
Steinard was a bachelor and
lived at the farm alone
He is survived by his father
and mother who live three
miles west of Garber and by
three 'brothers and three sisters

FAILED BANKS
TO PAY DIVIDENDS
Approximately 7500 form-
er depositors in state banks
which failed before the re-
peal of the guaranty law will
receive a little more money in
dividends out of the assets of
these banks tha they would
have otherwise as a result of
a recent supreme court de-
cision which held that depos-
itors are preferred credi-
itors under the old guaranty
law and must be mid before
other creditors of the bank
have any claim to the assets
being liquidated The opinion
will be a strong point in fav-
or of the state in the surety
company cases wh'ch will be
heard in federal court soon
These organizations con-
tend deposits of municipal and
government funds which they
guaranteed with surety bonds
should be paid back out of the
bank assets along with de-
posits of ordinary depositors
before coming to them for
payment of losses under their
bonds
The court's opinion ruled it
was the intent of the guaran-
ty law that unsecured credi-
tors or depositors should be
cared for before secured credi-
tors could have claims to as-
sets This opinoin if followed by
the federal court would result
in the surety company's being
required to make good a large
part of the three million dol-
lars bonded public funds in-
volved in state bank funds and
one million dollars of Indian's
' funds deposited by the government
