ONE of the finest performances
seen on television in the past
few years in our humble opin-
ion was that of Art Carney in
"Call Me Back" The adept
comedian played a hopeless al-
coholic who has lost everything
—his divorced wife treasured
daughter new girlfriend and job
For an hour Carney held the
audience entranced while he called
one person after another finally
trying to strike up a conversation
with the long distance operator
in a desperate attempt to break
his loneliness It was a one-
man show and a performer must
be topnotch to carry it off by him-
self Art was more than equal
to the occasion He was great
and if he doesn't garner an
Emmy for this there just "ain't
no justice"
On the same night Jerry Lewis
had one of his "spectaculars"
This we greeted with mixed
emotions When Lewis met
Martin the latter was an ex-pug
with a passable voice but no show
business acumen He was
In short going nowhere The
boys teamed up and Jerry com-
ing from a show business family
taught Dean all the tricks in the
trade Then when they be-
came famous and Martin had
learned all he needed the pupil
turned his back on the master
and most mutual friends put their
chips on Jerry Unfortunately
Dean has carried on well alone
while Jerry still trying to play
the clown has steadily gone
downhill

off my mind Am I wrong in try-
ing to keep him? What would
you do?"
We would first ask a question:
Is he worth 'keeping'? And the
answer would have to be based on
considerations more important
than "liking" him and not being
able to "forget" him
What kind of a person is he?
