A MERICA needs insect-proof
I homes
It isn't the ordinary pests that
architects and leading home build-
ers are talking about They are
concerned about a tiny ant-like
creature called the termite While
mosquitoes house flies roaches and
ordinary ants may bedevil home-
owners personally the termite at-
tacks the dwelling itself eating out
the interior of beams rafters
studs and flooring until only hol-
low shells remain
The extent of the damage they
do in this fa Ilion is astounding
Government xperts estimate it
exceeds $40000000 annually and
this figure is climbing rapidly Lit-
tle is heard of them because the
havoc they wreak unlike that of
fires tornadoes and earthquakes
creates no excitement and is us-
ually hidden from view Occasion-
ally of course termites do break
Into newspaper headlines When a
piano mysteriously fell through the
floor of a Pacific coast residence a
few years ago that was news
When a few days later a sofa ex-
ecuted a similar plunge bccalae
the floor beneath it collapsed that
too made a headline and started
an investigation Twenty-four out
of twenty-five structures examined

Invasion Puzzles Scientists
The rapid spread of the termite
Invasion in recent years has puz-
zled scientists Some authorities
attribute it to the destruction of
the nation's forests where the ter-
mites formerly feasted on the
wood of fallen trees Now because
the big forests have disappeared
the insects have been forced to
turn to other sources o: food
chiefly the homes of men Today
termite depredations are being
found with increasing frequency in
lorty-5ve of the forty-eight states
In Illinois alone termite damage is
now several million dollars a year
and it is not one of the worst
states
So serious has the problem be-
come that a recent report to the
American Institute of Architects
urges its members to sponsor a nation-wide
effort to combat the in-
vasion Hence the demand for termite-proof
homes
Within the past few years build-
ing material manufacturers have
taken a keen interest in making
their materials resistant to termite
attack Among the leaders in this

Protected against attack by termites is this new
home in St Petersburg Florida Fermi-processed cane
fiber insulation was placed between floors to form a
barrier to the direct spread ot these insects which do
more than $40000000 damage to buildings in the
United States each year Below is an enlargement of
a termite Also a beam that has been riddled by ter-
mite attack
work has been The Celotex Com-
pany which several years ago de-
veloped the Ferox process for pro-
tecting its tropical shipments of
cane fiber insulating products This
company is now applying this proc-
ess to all its cane fiber products
used in the United States Another
process has been developed by the
Curtin-Howe Corporation for the
treatment of wood products with-
out discoloration or odor a marked
advance over the use of creosote
Another process for ridding homes
Infested with termites has been de-
veloped by the E L Bruce Com-
pany Home Protection Needed
"Protection against termites hi
certain to become an important
phase of home construction"
thinks B G Dahlberg president
of the first of these companies
"Adequate protection Is inexpen-
sive to achieve and is likely be-
fore long to be demanded by home
loan organizations for dwellings
they finance Owners of homes al-
ready built should have annual in-
spections made to prevent the pests
from gaining a foothold If ter-
mites are discovered before their
work has progressed too far ex-
Pensive repairs mav be avoided"
