q Robert (Skeet) Riegel Tulsa Okla
the National Amateur champion of
1947 teed off today in quest of his
first 'chunk of pro cash and glory
with a one-stroke lead over the
r field in the 14th Masters Golf
tournament
Going into the second round how-
! ever he was hard-pressed by five
players some of them young stars
and the others with experience dat
'way back In laot sentimental-
ists saw the finest chance in the
history of the tournament for one
of the former greats to win the
f title
' Riegel shot a 69 over the 6900-
— yard course which Bobby Jones
t- helped engineer for this annual re-
' union of champs from as far back
as 20 years Morton Smith who won
two of the earlier flusters events
and just about everything else in
the early 30's carded 70 So did
Lawson Little who was king of the
amateurs at the time Smith was
leading the pros and who later
turned professional Little is 40
Smith is 41
1 Grouped with them at 79 con-
I sidered excellent scores for the raw
Windy day that greeted the tour-
' nament were Jim Ferrier tall San
Franciscan 1947 Masters champion
' Jimmy Demaret and 26-year-old
Herchel Spears who operates out of
Ala
Riegel had the advantage of being
in front and he isn't worried about
the pressure because he has made
scores of tournaments in the past
few years He only turned pro in
January and he isn't yet eligible
to pick up cash in professional
golfers association tournaments
The Masters however is not a PGA
tournament

If - you baseball fans kare really
—
hankering for some good baseball
you ought to go un and watch the
Rangers and Golcibugs play once in
a while The Goldbugs have prob-
ably one of the teams in their his-
tory and the Rangers have a very
patent ball club capable of putting
up some red hot baseball
Saturday afternoon the South-
western Bulldogs come here freih
from a victory over Wichita Uni-
versity Far years Southwestern has
been a power in baeball a d has
bee tV recognized by universities over
the Southwest as a very formidable
Oval: ' getting on the schedule of
More than one major selnol Next
Week they tangle with the A and
Alt'toWboys They lost to them last
season in a thrilling 1 to 0 pitcher's
duel
They easily won the conference
last Season and are after the
crown again despite the fact that
Bob Henry their University of Tex-
as transfer has signed a pro con-
tract with the Chicago Cub cha
gang In the past few seasons Ran-
kin Williams' team has sent six
players Intl organized baseball
One of their best prospects now
is young Max Oakes the sensation-
al Taloga speedster who might start
here Saturday Last season pitch-
ing: for Woodward in the semipro
tourney he defeated the powerful
Perry entry
For this one Dick Highfill has
been saving and grooming Bob Sch-
erich the Winchester Shotgun Sch-
erieh did some fine work here last
season with the Athletics and
seems to be about ready now to
uncork his Sunday pitches against
the Bulldogs
1"The boys seem to be in good
shape now and I am pleased at the
way they are clicking both at bat
and afield They have been looking
like a ball club lately" Dick High-
fill told us Friday morning in a
tone that A:vas quite different than
his usual ghomy pre-game ruinbl-
logs There will be one change in the
infield due to the fact that Johnny
Walker shortstop has sprained his
ankle and been granted permission
to spend a weekend with his folks
att Tulsa In his place will be the
stylish Freddie Slope who has really
been crowding him for the position

(11P) --- Manager Billy Meyer and
home-run king Ralph Killer put
their stamps of approval on $100000
bonus pitcher Paul Pettit today de-
spite the fact that the Pittsburgh
Pirates walloped their expensive
farmhand for six runs In one in-
ning yesterday
Killer who watched from the dug-
out said "His fast ball seems to
sneak up on the batter It's hard
to get around on him I think he
looks mighty good"
"The pressure was terrific on the
boy" Meyer said "He was strain-
ing and he didn't look loose But
he showed me plenty and the boys
came back to the bench after the
first inning saying how sneaky fast
he was He's going t3 be all right
He's Just a baby"
Pettit settled down after the six-
run first inning in winch wildness
was his worst enemy and pitched
three scoreless frames before retir-
ing The Pirates went on to beat
theirNew Orleans f armhands 10 to

We asked Andy how he thought the
Cards would fare this season in thc
NL pennant race "Nlt ) well They
don't seem to have much power now
If they wip it looks like Eddie Dyn
wi'l have to come up with a sm- I
prise in every position" Andy told
us
Coach Dean Simon is not so hot
on those little technical balk rule
And doubts their aid t the club
thqy are supposed to help When
Jack Ging was at bat he hit a ho-
mer only to have it called no good
because the pitcher was caught in
the act of villating a small de!ivery
technique which comes under the
balk rule "It wouldn't have been so
bad had the umps called it before
the delivery and called time so we
could have hcard it" Simon said
Anyhow it cost the Goldbugs' two
runs Now if a violation comes up
in football against the other side
you get your preference of taking
the gain or accepting the penalty
"There's something a littel screwy
