BOSTON—(UP) — One hundred
and two pitches burst the Bobby
Feller bubble
That's how many times the
famed Rapid Robert sent his leg-
endary fast ball and his once-
magnificient curge winging toward
the plate in the fifth game
of the world series
But this time instead of burn-
ing their way past enemy bats
with 'untouchable speed or cun-
ning manipulation which frustrated
the hungry wood they all too
often were temptingly touchable
So for the second time In this
series he was beaten by the far
from murderous Boston Braves
The first time they were lucky to do
It For Feller had pitched a
two-hitter where defeat was a
thing of heartbreak But this
time they humiliated the highest
paid pitcher in baseball history
After six and one-third innings
in which they made him look like
a cousin baseball parlance for
somebody easy to handle he was
belted from the mound In that
time he had given them eight hits
and eight runs
"Thank God for Feller" said
Tommy Holmes of the Braves
after the game
No insult was intended But
it was there just the same
There were days when even the
best batters trembled at the
thought of facing that fast ball
And there was a club which makes
no pretense of being great at the
plate offering prayers for the priv-
ilege of hitting against him
The reason was that as so often
this year when the whisper has
gone around the circuit that Feller
Is losing his stuff the bull-shouldered
boy from Iowa didn't have it
on the ball His fast one
limped up there just pleading to
be plastered and his curve curt-
sied to every batter They din't
have to be asked twice those
Braves
In the first inning they rammed
three hits including Bob Elliorr's
third - run homer Then again
in the third the squared-jawed
third 'baseman sent the ball
screaming out of the park
Still it seemed that Feller might
realize his dream of pitching a
World 'series victory when the 'sin-
diaha put him out in front 5

CLEVELAND Oct 12 —(UP)—
Alter two weeks of tension this
baseball minded city on Lake Erie
today planned a Parade and civic

the world the Cleveland Indians
The chomps are 'slated to return
from Boston today and folks here
were getting ready to give them a
rip-roaringl Welcome A big victory
banquet' hos been tplannbell for noon
Thursday by the Cleveland Lions
club
However there were few signs of
a celebration yesterday -when the
Indians grabbed the series with a
4 to 3 win over the Braves in Boston
When the radio announced Bob
Kennedy's catch of Tommy Holmes'
fly for the final out a few 'auto-
Anobile horns were tooted and a
host of toasts raised But the gen-
eral mood was quiet and every-
body seemed disappointed that the
first Indians' series in 28 years
hadn't been won at home

We still believe baseball is the
most honest game in sports despite
the fact that the boys who hang
around the race tracks and the
wrestling matches insists that it
is crooked
The other day we heard one
fellow teling another the Cleve-
land Indians would not cinch the
series Sunday "There - is too
much at stake—too much money
involved The magnates are not
going to stop there because look
at the big gates they are drawing
It is all fixed for Boston to
win" he argued And to back
up his belief he laid a half cen-
tury note on the barrel head
When Boston won he folded up his
winnings with 41 crafty smile say-
ing "a sucker is born every minute"
Possibly no homecoming game
for a decade on the hill has
the trimmings of the one com-
ing up from a standpoint of in-
terest In years past we have
witnessed a lot of listless and
drab affairs because few people
believed the Rangers could win
and it was just another defeat
But this season It Is really some-
thing Townspeople and old grads
are fired up and vision greatness
comparable of old ghost teams
visioned as they used to romp
on the old Northwestern gridiron
In the late teens
The 1948 Rangers have demon-
strated they have striking power
can block and tackle And one
of the best features Is the fact
that the old college spirit is rid-
ing high in the shade of the
"Old Castle" and the pep organ-
izations are really putting in some
genuine stuff in their efforts
as they ride high on the old col-
lege try theme
This fine spirit hid exuded out
and encompassed the townspeoplei
