THE TEXAS QUESTION MARK
After six months—as president of
the United States the Pride of
Texas Lyndon Baines Johnson is
beginning to gradually shed the
glamour which he has been endow-
ed and reveal the clay of the man
underneath His sole ambition is to
succeed himself to the White House
and his favorite quotation "Come
Let Us Reason Together" has be-
come "Reason my way—or else"
One railroad eAecutive upon em-
erging from the midnight session
between labor and management at
the White House about the railroad
strike said that he hoped he would
never be subject to such an ordeal
again while a grinning president
could not get to the broadcasting
station fast enough to shout to the
world that he had settled the rail-
road strike
His proverty program has little
real substance—he wants to put
rugs and music in Appalachia with
taxpayers paying the bill so they
"can cut a rug" Johnson style
I agree with him that many gov-
ernment publications should be
eliminated-4 recently asked for a
government bulletin on a garden
vegetable and received one printed
in the government printing office
in 1942—Some of the bulletins to be
eliminated are "Building with
Logs" "Chemical composition of
flue-cured tobacco" and others
THURSDAY MAY 14 1964
"The common people" so design-
ated by his mentor the late nit—
are awakening to his reasoning
These excerpts come from national
papers of non-klitical affiliation A
minister's wife in Kentucky says
"There is someing about him I don't
like—I think it is his manner—and
all these strange little people around
him" while a printer in Nashville
says that he has always voted
straigh Democratic" but he seems
just a little bit like a Sneaky Pete
to me" A grandmother laments
that "he has a sweet face and
seems to adore his daughters but
I wonder why he pulled the dog's
ears"
Therein lies the key to the John-
son dharacter—in small things by
which he is betrayed No man of
dignity would kiss a senator on
both cheeks or kiss little girls be-
fore the camera—just for the effect
—The "kissing cousins" in Texas
probably feel complimented when
he plants a "big bus" on their cheek
but Texas is a small segment of
the country he represents
We never had to apologize for the
conduct of President Kennedy—the
same cannot be said for LBJ with
his free-wheeling manner which re-
flects neither dignity or intellect—
as befits a president of the United
States His cruelty in holding the
Beagles up by the ears "just to
hear them yelp" has brought wide
protest from people all over the
country and joining a Mullane Soc-
iety is not going to remove that act
of cruelty— so revealing — "Twig
their ears and make them yelp"
may well prove to be his theme
song
