CHAPTER VH—Continued
"I've had some trouble with my ear
down the road" he said finally lie
glanced at Dale again 'I came to
atilt if I might telephone"
"Did it require a searchlight to find
the house?" Mies Cornelia asked see-
p4elotelly "Look hers" the young man blue-
tered "why are you asking Inc all
these questioner Ile tapped bls cig-
arette ease with an Irritated air
"What's your name?" Anderson
said sternly
"Bereeford—rtegbudd Beresford"
said the young loan solidly "If you
doubt it—live probably got a card
somewhere—K Ile began to rue
through his pocket
"What's your business?" went on
the detective
"What's nay business here?" queried
the young man obviously fencing
with his Interrogator
"No—how do you earn your liv-
ing?" said Anderson sharply
"I don't" said the young man flip-
pantly "I army have to begin now if
that is of any interest to you As a
matter of fact I've :dialled law but—"
The one word was enough to start
Lizzie off on another trail of distrust
"Ile may be a lawyer—" she glinted
to herself sepulchrally from the eve-
ning newapaper article that had dealt
with the mysterious Identity of the
Bat
"And you came here to telephone
about your car?" persisted the detec-
tive Dale rose from her chair with a
hopeless little sigh
"Oh don't you see—he's trying to
protect me" she said wearily She
turned to the young man "It's no
use Mr Iterestord"
Beresford's air of flippancy van-
ished "I see" he said He turned to the
others frankly "Well the plain
truth is—I didn't know the situation
—and I thought I'd play safe for Miss
Ogden's sake"
Miss Cornelia moved over to her
niece proteetingly She put a hand
on Dale's shoulder to reassure her
and turned to Anderson calmly
"Ile doesn't know anything about—
this" she said In Pairesford
"He brought Mr Fleming here in his
car—that's all"
Anderson looked at Beresford for
eonflrmatbm
'I a that true?"
"Yes" said lieresford He started
to explain "I got tired of waiting
and so I----"
The detective broke in curtly
"All right"
He took a step toward the alcove
"Now doctor" He nodded at the
huddle beneath the raincoat
ford followed followed his glance—and saw the
ominoue beep for the first time
"What's that?" he said tersely No
one answered him Tlie doctor was
already on his knees beside the body
drawing the raincoat gently aside
Beresford stared at the shape thus
revealed with frightened eyes The
color left his face
"That's not—Dick Fleming—is it?"
be said thickly
Anderson slowly nodded his head
lierestord seemed unable to believe
his eyes
"If you've looked over the ground"
said the doctor in a low vohie to An-
derson "I'll move the body where we
can have a better light" His right
hand fluttered swiftly over Fleming's
still clenched list—exatracted from it
a torn corner of paper
Still Beres-ford did not seem to be
able to take in whet had happened
Ete took another step toward the hotly
"Do you mean to say that Dick
Fleming—" be began Anderson fib
boaced him with an uplifted hand
"What have you got there Doctor?"
he said in a still voice
The doctor still on his knees beside
the corpse lifted ids head
"What do you mean?"
"You took something gust then out
of Fleming's bald" said the detec-
tive "I took nothing out of his hand“
said the doctor firmly
"I warn you not to obstruct the
eourse of Justice!" he said forcibly
"Give it here!"
The doctor rose slowly dusting off
his knees Ills ayes tried to meet An-

her lingers fumbled at the bosom
of her dress—she took out the pre-
cious dangerous fragment of blue-
print that Anderson must not find in
her possession—but where to hide it
before her ehatim had passed? iler
eyes fell on the bread roll from the
deteetive's supper-tray that had fallen
to the floor when Lizzie bad seen her
gleaming eye on the stairs and had
lain there unnoticed ever since She
bent over swiftly and secreted the
tantilizing scrap of blue paper iu the
body of the roll smoothing the crust
back above it with trembling lingers
lion she replaced the roll where it
had fallen originally end straightened
up Juet as Billy and the detective both
returned
Billy Went inililediately to the tray
picked it up and started to go out
again Then he noticed the roll on
the door stooped for it and replaced
it upon the tray lIe looked at Miss
Cornelia for histructionie
"Take that tray out to the dining
sown" she said mechanically But
Anderson's attehtion had already beeu
drawn to the tiny incident
"Wait—I'll look at that tray" he
said briskly Dale her heart in her
mouth watched him examine the
knives the plates even shake out the
napkin to see that nothing was bid-
den in its folds At last he seemed
satisfied
"All right—take tt away" he com-
manded Bill's nodded and vanished
toward the dining room with tray and
roll Dale breathed again
"Lizzie" she commended now "go
out in the kitcheu and make some
coffee I'm sure we all need it" bile
sighed
Lizzie bristled at once
"Go out in that kitchen alone?"
"Billy's there" said Miss Cornelia
wearily
The thought of Billy seemed to bring
little soles to Lizzie's heart
'Tina jap and his jewy-litsu" she
muttered viciously "One twist and
rd be folded up like a pretzel!"
But Miss Cornelius manner was im-
perative—amid Lizzie slowly dragged
herself kitchenward yawning and
promising the KOLAS repentance of
every sin she had or bad not coma-
omitted if she were allowed to get there
wii bout something grabbing at her
ankles In the dark corner of the ball
When the door bad shut behind her
Anderson turned to Dale the corner
of blue-print which he had taken from
time doctor in his hand
"Now Miss Odgen" he said tensely
"I have here a scrap of blue-print
which was in Dick Fleming's hand
when he was killed Fit trouble you
for time rest of it if you please!"
"The rest of it?" queried Dale with
a show of bewilderment silently thank-
ing her steirs that for the moment at
least the incriminating fragment had
passed out of her possession
Iler reply seemed only to Infuriate
the detective
"Don't tell me Fleming started to go
out of this house with a blank scrap
of paper in his hand" he threatened
"lie didn't start to go out at all!"
Dale rose Was Anderson trying a
chance shot in the dark—or had he
stumbled upon some fresh evidence
against her? She could not tell from
his manner
"Why do you say that?" she feinted
"ills caps there on the table" said
time detective with crushing tersenees
Dale started She had not remelt
bered the cap—why hadn't she burned
it—COliCented it—as she had eonceabel
the blue-print? She pasesed a hand
over her forehead wearily
Miss Cornelia watched her niece
"Jr you're keeping anything back
him" she said
Dale knew herself cornered at 'eel-
The detective's deductions were only
too shrewd—do what she would she
could keep him away from the truth
no longer
"Ile was going to take the inoney

pitifully feeling a certain relief of
despair steal over her now that she
no longer needed to go on lying--lying

web of falsehood
"Dale!" gasped Mks Cornelia
alfinned But Dale went en reckless
of consequences to herself though still
warily shielding jack

for a moment

secret reckless of what might follow
As long as Jack was cleared—what

lisilS Cornelia nipped the heroic at-

She put bersel' 'Ioveen her niece

tones of great dignity "No Mr An-

where that paper is—and she has not
said that she does—I shall want more
time and much legal advice before I
allow her to turn it over to you"
All the unconscious note of com-
mand that long-inherited wealth and
the pride of a great name can give was
in her voice and the detectivo for the
moment bowed before it defeated
Ile gave up his grilling of Dale for
the present and turned to question the
doctor awl lierosford who heal Just re-

In a temporary resting place in the
library

"Were there any powder marks?"
queried Miss Cornelia
"No—and the clothing was not

The detective received this informa-
tion without the change of a muscle

another angle
"Beresford did Fleming tell you
why he canoe here tonight?"
Ilerestord considered the question
"No lie seemed in a great hurry—
said Miss Ogden had telephoned him
—and asked one to drive him over"
"wily did y t oti come up to lite house?"
"We-el" said Iteresford with seem-
ing candor "I thought it was putting
rather a premium on friendship to
itt!ep me sitting out in the rain all
night so I canto top the drive—and by
the way!" lie snapped his fingers ir-
ritatedly as if recalling some signitt
cant incident that had slipped his
memory and drew battered object
from his pocket "I picked this up
about a hundred feet from the house"
he explained "A titan's watch It
was partly crushed into the ground
and as you see Its stopped running"
The detective took the object toad
examined it carefully A man's open-
face gold watch °rushed and battered
in as if It had been trampled upon by
a heavy heel
'Yes" he said thoughtfully "Stopped
