Head Bookkeeper Muat be Reliable
The chief bookkeeper In a large busi-
ness house In one of our great West-
ern cities speaks of the harm coffee
did for him:
"My wife and I drank our first cup
of Postum a little over two years ago
and wo have used It ever since to the
entire exclusion of tea and coffee It
happened In this way:
“About three and a half years ago
I had on tttack of pneumonia which
left a memento In the shape of dyspep-
sia or rather to speak more correctly
neuralgia o' the stomach My ‘cup of
cheer' had always been coffee or tea
but I became convinced after a time
that they aggravated my stomach trou
ble I happened to mention the mat-
ter to my grocer one day and be sug-
gested that I give Postum a trial
“Next day It came but the cook made
the mistake of not boiling It sufficient-
ly and we did not like It much This
was however soon remedied and now
wo like It so much that we will never
change back Postum being a food
bevorage Instead of a drug has been
tbo moans of curing my stomach trou-
ble I verily believe for I hm a well
man today and have used no other
remedy
“My work as chief bookkeeper In our
Co‘s branch house here is of a very
confining nature During my coffee-
drinking days I was subject to nerv-
ousness and ‘the blues In addition to
my sick spells These have left me
since I began UBing Postum and I can
conscientiously recommend It to those
Ivrhoso work confines them to long
hours of sevore mental exertion”

GOLDEN TEXT— "Therefore all thing

i 8uggeation and Practical Thought
The Golden Rule— V 12 “There-
fore" referring to the whole three
chapters as the sum of all the pre-
cepts given to the subjects of his king- n‘alng VrhalV-o’unceVlals
dom touching their conduct toward
their fellow men which conduct is also
puts it “With these words he now
cloiee his Instruction given In these
three chapters and ties It all up In one
little bundle
"All things whatsoever ye would
that men should do to you” All that
you would have a right to expect from 1
others all that would be really for
your good all that would be right and
fair
“Do ye even so to them” A11 our
actlona our business dealings our
friendly Intercourse our giving la to
be In accordance with this rule But
this does not require indiscriminate
giving of everything one aska for that
kind of giving would not be good for
us We are under obligations to give
so that we really do good It la not
so much a question of the worthy or
the unworthy poor as of really bene-
fiting the recipient
"For this la the law and the proph-
ets” ' It la the sum of the duties to
man required by the law and taught
by the prophets (Matt 22:40) It Im-
plies the state of the heart and life
which It was their purpose to produce
The Adventure of the Golden Rule
Into the Judgment Hall — Vs 1 2
“Judge not” The word “Judge” here
does not mean form an opinion for
everyone must do this of many persona
and things (Luke 12:57 John 7:24)
It does not forbid us to condemn wrong
actions wrong principles and speak
out our condemnation
The Adventure of the Mote and the
Beam— Vs 3-5 Still in the judgment !
hall Two men are presented one 1
with a “mote” in hls eye a small fault
that keeps him from seeing clearly the
paths of right or wrong The other
with a “beam” In his eye a great fault
that blinds him from seeing the truth
la himself and others And yet the
man with the beam is trying to correct
the vision of the man with the mote
The Adventure of the Pearls and
the Swine— V 6 In the same Judg-
ment hall there Is presented another
scene A man with rich and costly
pearls is casting them before swine
who care nothing for their beauty but
would rather have the swill In their
trough and finding that the pearls are
not food will “turn again and rend
you” In their anger at their dlsapi
polntment You must chango their na-
ture before the pearls oFholy things
will jdo them any good
The Adventture of the Golden Rule
In the Prayermeeting— Vs 7-11 The
Golden Rule is' the chief Inspirer of
prayer for the temperance cause
Prayer is the door to the divine treas-
ure house which contains supplies for
all our needs The living according to
the principles set forth In the Sermon
on the Mount is so difficult an attain-
ment and bringing the whole world to
obey them Is so colossal an undertak-
ing that without continual connection
with heaven and supplies of grace and
power from heaven the achievement
would be Impossible And this Is as
true of temperance as of any other
virtue or reform There are three
methods of praying (1) “Ask” Ex-
press your desires to God both In se-
cret and when God's people are gath-
ered together
(2) “Seek” by aU active efforts
which are acted prayers use all pos
slhle means as In the parable of the
pearl of great price It is useless to
pray with words If we do not put forth J
every effort to accomplish our part of
the answer
(3) “Knock" at the door of God’s
treasure house of blessings for the
blessings which no seeking can obtain
but which must be given directly from
God
10 “If he ask a fish will he give him
a serpent?” Never But If he asks for
a serpent thinking It to be a fish he
will give him the fish and not the ser-
pent thus really answering hls prayer
for the son wanted a fish and ipt the
Berpent
The answers will not always be
given In Just the way we expect but
they will come and In the best way
through the ones that pray We pray
for better fruit God does not an-
swer by raising apples and peaches
and grapes nor by sending them in
barrels He gives us gardens and
skill and seeds and sunshine and
rain and this la a thousand times the
best way We pray for temperance
God’s lightning does not smite the sa-
loons and those who sell In them
But he Is answerin' the prayers all
the time and never so abundantly as
to-day

LEG A MASS OF HUMOR
"About seven years ago a small
abrasion appeared on my right leg
just above my ankle It Irritated me
so that 1 began to scratch it and it
began to spread until my leg from my
ankle to the knee was one solid scale
like a scab The Irritation was always
worse at night and would not aUow
me to sleep or my wife either and It
was completely undermining our
health I lost fifty pounds In weight
and was almost out of my mind with
pain and chagrin as no matter where
the Irritation came at work on the
street or In the presence of company
I would have to scratch It until I had
the blood running down into my shoe
1 simply cannot describe my suffer-
ing during those seven years The
pain mortification loss of sleep both
to myself and wife Is simply Indescrib-
able on paper and one has to expe-
rience It to know what It 1b

while I began to see a change and
after taking a dozen bottles of Cutl-

Who Art the Elect?
Two modern statements of the doc-
trine of "election" neither of which
would quite satisfy John Calvin or
Jonathan Edwards are given In the
Congregationalism
One was Henry Ward Beecher's epi-
grammatic and convincing phrase:
“The elect are whosoever will the
non-elect are whoeoever won’t"
Good as this Is there is another ex-
planation that Is a star of equal mag-
nitude It was made by a colored di-
vine who said:
"Brethren It Is this way: The Lord
he is always voting for a man and the
devil he Is always voting against him
Then the man himself votes and that
breaks the tie!”
