The April Smart Sat
In the novelties which qpena
the April Smart srace Mac-
Oowan Cooke has 3k an en
tirely new note in fiction It is a
story of the West so saturated
with the-atmosphere of that part
of our country and so photo-
graphic in its depiction of ranch
lifethat itwililake high rank a-
mong the best tales af that class'
yet it is- more as a study that
‘’The-Red-Headed Woman" “will
win praise The heroine is the
most original the most human
the most refreshing woman who
for a long time hs stepped from
a printed page There is no
reader who will not be interested
by her vagaries and fascinated by
her remarkable career
Thr shorts tor ieS in this
num-
ber cover a wide field First of
all there is a wonderfully graph- j Leader office
ic tale by a new writer JuliaLaw
reuce Shatter which she has
called "A Realist" In it with
consummate art she analyzes
the intricate character of a for-
lorn criminal who has become a
subject of interest for s novelist
in search of “copy” This story
alone would make any mugazine
worth whih but there are other
exceptionally “interesting tales
notably by William R Lightoa
who tells how a dead love was
resurrected in '‘The Shadow of a
Shadow” by Mrs Henry Dude-
ney who writes a powerful Eng-
lish story of 1838 in “The Swift
Ships” by Arthur Stringer
who goes to the Canadian fron-
tier for the scene of “In the
Dusk of the Goddess” by Guy
Bolton whose wit sparkles in
“The' Sign Painter"' by Inz
Haynes Gilmore who contributes-
a delightful love story
“The-Gods of Hunger”-and by
O G Dwight who writes a
charming story entitled “Susan-
nah and the Elder” ’
Bliss Carman has contributed
an essay to this number “On
Having Known a Painter” where-
in he again reveals himself as a
writer of exquisite pri se
The poetry is far above the
average of magazine verses and
is written by such favorite auth-
ors as Edith M Thomas Clarence
Urmy Zona Gal Madison Caw
ein Arthur Davison Ficke Nan-
nieByrd Turner and Guuver-
neurNlornsT the latter-supplying
another instalment of his in
imilabl verses “Below Stairs
The April Smart Set maintains
its own high standard of exell-
ence and is remarjcable for the
note of variety which it strikes

the largest ever paid for such
work and does not include the
