St Joseph Mo May 27 — An at-
tempt was made to hold up Burling-
ton express train No 20 last night
at Iioy's branch about one mile
north of the city limits The train
left Omaha at five o'clock and is due
to arrive at the Union passenger sta-
tion here at 0:15 leaving for St
Louis at 0:33 Engineer Fred Mud-
gett was startled by the explosion
of two torpedoes but looking ahead
saw nothing to indicate danger lie
ran 200 yeards past the point where
the torpedoes exploded and looking
back saw a red light swinging near
the track Conductor Samuel T Tat-
ura at once divined the presence of
train robbers and signaled the en-
gineer to proceed which he did cau-
tiously In order to avoid conse-
quences of a possible error in judg
ment The train arrived at the Union
station ten minutes late the police
department was notified and a switch
engine was at once pressed into serv-
ice by Superintendent C M Ilohl
who took a strong poRse of police
to the scene The robbers had dis-
appeared taking with them the red
lantern Roy's branch has been the
scene of many successful holdups

drew his creese and slashed Sergt
Walling cutting his arm completely
off Lieut Humber attempted to
shoot the Moro but his revolver
missed fire and the native escaped
in the tall grass
Gen Davis the commander of the
American troops in Mindanao has re
iterated his orders that no American
soldiers are o leave camp unless in
a party of at least eight men who
must be armed and prepared for any

has been annihilated by rebels near

of Mocha is said to have been car-
ried away by the rebels as a hostage
