A IB-year-old Fort Sill soldier is in
satisfactory condition in Reynolds
Army Hospital today after receiving a
gunshot wound in the thigh, apparently
while showing his wife how to operate
a pistol, officials said
Steven N Burke, 316%2 N Washing-
ton, told police he was preparing to
leave for three days in the field and
wanted his wife to know how to operate
the 22-caliber pistol
While showing her how to load and
cock the pistol, it discharged, with the
bullet striking him in the thigh just
above the knee, he told police.
WASHINGTON (AP) - For the rest
of his public career. Sen Hubert H
Humphrey is likely to bear a title
unique in the history of the U S Sen-
ate.
Humphrey's fellow Democrats, in a
show of respect Wednesday, voted to
give the three-time presidential candi-
date from Minnesota the title and role
of deputy president pro tempore of
the Senate " The full Senate is ex-
pected to follow suit
Along with the honor, Humphrey
would get some of the perquisites of
the majority leader s job which he un-
successfully sought a limousine, an
extra $8,000 in salary, a special office
and staff, and inclusion in the lead
ership groups which represent the Sen-
ate at the White House
The same title and honors. in the fu
ture, would go to any senator who has
been either president or vice president
Humphrey was vice president from
1965-69
Humphrey, who recently had surgery
for cancer of the bladder, dropped out
of the running for Senate majority
leader Tuesday when it became clear
to him that he would not beat Sen
Robert Byrd of West Virginia.
Humphrey told reporters he liked the
new honor "just fine " He said it will
give him the opportunity he sought in
seeking the majority leadership to take
a leadng role in "developing, molding,
and hopefully passing constructive leg-
islation "
Byrd had appointed a special com-
mittee of Sens Abraham Ribicoff, D-
Conn . Henry M Jackson D Wash
and Edward M Kennedy, D Mass , to
recommend a special role for Hum-
phrey.
The panel proposed the new deputy
president pro tem position with a
852,000 salary, equal to that paid the
majority and minority leaders The
standard congressional salary is
$44,600
Byrd said the recommendation ap-
pealed to all and was adopted unani-
mously
Ribicoff said the committee consid-
ered the fact that one president and
four vice presidents before Humphrey
have become members of the Senate —
President Andrew Johnson and Vice
Presidents John ( Breckinridge, John
C. Calhoun, Hannibal Hamlin and Al-
ben W Barkley
Fire Extinguished
A kitchen fire in a westside apart-
ment complex caused an estimated
$7,500 damage today, fire officials said
Lt Doran Bishop, city fire depart-
ment, said the fire in the apartment of
Mrs Charles Hoover. 5515 Cache Road,
was. probably started by a burner on
the electric stove
There was no one in the apartment
at the time of the blaze, Bishop said,
except an Irish setter, which was un
hurt
He took it all pretty easy," Bishop
said When the fire department units
arrived at 8 15 a m. and entered the
apartment, the dog sauntered out, fire-
men said
None of the other apartments in the
complex. Crosby Park Apartments,

Myung Moon's Unification Church, ar
guing for tax exemption for property
in the city assessed at more than 12 5
million, claims its activities on Viet-
nam and Watergate were nonpolitical
Neil Salonen, president of the Ameri-
can Unification Church, also told the
City Tax Commission Wednesday that
the Korean evangelist is the "prophet
and founder" of the church but has no
other relationship to the American
branch
The organization is seeking tax ex-
emptions on religious grounds for a
former factory complex in Queens as-
sessed at $1 55 million, a former uni-
versity club building on West 43rd
Street assessed at $1 03 million, and a
five-story brownstone on the upper
West Side assessed at $34,000
Other properties belonging to the
sect. including the New Yorker Hotel
and Manhattan Center meeting hall,
were not involved because they were
acquired since last January
Commission President Marshall
Kaplan said the hearing was not con-
cerned with ideology, but only with
whether the sect was organized for re-
ligious purposes and the property was
being used for such purposes
Moon, whose millions have been
amassed mainly through the work of
his young followers who receive only
food, shelter clothing and other neces-
sities. has come under attack for alleg-
edly using some of his many holdings
for commercial purposes
Salonen denied that Moon's group
had opposed the impeachment of for-
mer President Nixon or that Moon had.
as reported, visited Nixon in the White
House
He said Moon s declaration on Water-
gate was only a plea that the nation s
wounds be healed through the nation
uniting "in a spirit of repentance
This, he added, was the inspiration
for the sect s National Prayer and Fast
for Watergate program
Questioned about the sect's stand on
