Weiss had one small problem as he
waited tn be questioned by immigra-

money to prove that he could support
himself until he found work
"11 came my turn, and I heard that
you had to have $25. I only have $20.
You see. I play cards, and I lost a
little in the cards. I won a little, too.
but I was still short $5
I mentioned that I only got $20, so
they ask me if my brothers who are
already here can help me out. Of
course they are very well off. They are
in America So it is okay, as long as I
got $20," Weiss said
While Weiss spent only a few hours
on Ellis Island, another sightseer on
Saturday's tour spent several months.

NEW YORK (AP) - Samuel Weiss
looked up at the sunlight pouring in
through the cracked windows in the
old immigration center and said, "It is
so different in 65 years it is so
changed It is so broken up "
in 1911, Weiss, an 18 year-old hat
maker from czarist Russia, came to
Ellis Island on his way to becoming a
citizen of the United States
He returned to Ellis Island on Satur-
day. on the first boatload of tourists to
visit the immigration center since it
shut down in 1954
in the past 22 years, the red brick
buildings on the 27-ai re island almost
in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty
have been neglected and vandalized
Ceilings caved in, electrical wiring fell
in great loops in dark rooms where
floors were heaped with forgotten files
and the skeletons of small birds
Thieves tore out the copper wiring and
brass pipes
Most of the neglect and damage are
still visible, although work crews have
removed loose plaster and portable
generators have restored limited elec -
tricity.
This place is like a personthe 84-
year-old Weiss said as he followed a
guided tour led by National Park Serv-
ice staffers "When you get old, this is
what happens. Everything gets broken
up "
Weiss, who lives in Brooklyn with his
wife of 61 years, recalled the few hours
he spent on Ellis Island before he was
admitted to the United States
