‘We want to be as clinical as pos-
sible. Game Board (Chairman Samual
Harbo Jr said Thursday
Trapping or hunting the wolves on
foot is considered too time-consuming
and ineffective while the use of poi-
sons in predator control is dangerous
to other wildlife
No specific numbers of wolves to be
taken were set by the board, except in
the Yakutat area where 50 of 80
wolves believed to be preying on a
herd of about 800 moose will be shot if
funds are available
"One thing people often overlook,"
said game director Robert Rausch, "is
that if we can build up the moose
herds, the wolves should be able to in-
crease nearly proportionately

A court injunction issued Wednesday
has stopped the city from issuing a
work order on a new waterline project
in a lawsuit filed against the City of
Lawton because it awarded the project
contract to a local firm rather than the
low bidder.
District Judge Jack Brock issued the
temporary and permanent injunctions
in favor of Aqueduct Contractors, Inc ,
Oklahoma City which filed the suit
Aqueduct fill'd the lawsuit against
the city last month after it submitted
the lowest bid but failed to receive the
contract for a three-mile waterline ex-
tension to the city's new sewer treat
ment plant
Aqueduct bid $249,170, but city coun-
cilmen instead awarded the contract to
the next highest bidder. B&N Construe
lion Co , Lawton, at $249,465 because it
is a local firm
The out-of-town firm subsequently
filed the suit to stop the city from is-
suing a work order on the project, al-
leging a violation of the state s Public
Competitive Bidding Act of 1974
City Public Works Director Paul
Brune Thursday said the city had
signed a contract with B&N but work
had not begun.
The court's injunction issued
Wednesday is permanent and means
the city cannot issue a work order to
B&N
City Attorney Jerry Cude said the
next move is up to the Lawton City
< ouncil The city could award the con-
tract to the low bidder appeal the
case, or reject all bids and readvertise
for new ones
The proposed line is to provide a
permanent water supply to the new
sewer treatment plant which is under
construction south of Lawton

UNEAU. Alaska (AP) _ Armed
bwologists flying in helicopters will be
deployed early next year to kill wolves
preying on moose herds in three areas
of Alaska
The State Board of Game on Thurs
day approved the plan, which has
drawn a flood of protests from con
servation groups across the nation
The wolf-control program will begin
during mid February in two game
management units south of Fairbanks
and a third near Yakutat if the weath-
er is right
The wolf is an endangered species in
many states, but not in Alaska There
are about 10,000 wolves statewide
nearly the same as 50 years ago Up to
200 could tie killed during the next five
years
Wolves apparently have been making
heavy inroads into big game herds
angering hunters For example the
wolf has been blamed for a fourfold
decrease in the size of a moose herd on
the Tanana Flats near Fairbanks The
herd numbered more than 12,000 in
1965 but is now down to about 3,500,
with hunting severely curtailed
it was on the Tanana Flats that the
state planned an aerial hunt of wolves
last spring, but environmentalists won
a court injunction to stop it after chal-
lenging the authority of officials to or.
der the killings without express per-
mission of the Board of Game
Instead of private hunters flying
fixed wing planes, as planned last
spring, the latest attempt at wolf con
