L THE ILGIE
CARL CMAGEE
Give Light and the Feop le Will
Find Their Own Way"
We are In receipt of a letter from
Campbell Russell ("citizen—all rights
reserved") in which he protests
against our quoting him in connec-
tion with our opposition to the pres-
ent Jack Walton candidacy for cor-
poration commissioner We quoted
him as having said that he always
voted his ticket straight but that
he sometimes had to scratch a can-
didate off the ticket in order to
make it straight Mr Russell's let-
ter which we quote below does not
deny the accuracy of the quotation
He merely objects to our use of it
under circumstances which might
leave the impression upon the public
mind that he is out in an open can-
vass against Jack Walton At least
that is theimpression we get from
his letter
Here is the letter in full:
1 note that you quote me in re:
ticket scratching Your memory is
good I could not repudiate if I so
desired Not only could dozens of
witnessos be produced but in old
copies of The Cat on file in the
Oklahoma Historical Society this
statement can be found
"My views upon that subject have
undergone no change I never make
a political speech without quoting
the old Freeman's pledge: 'I pledge
that my vote shall be cast and my
suffrage used as my own conscience
shall dictate is for the public weal'
"I do object to having this quo-
tation brought out at this time in
connection with any particular can-
didate The people of Oklahoma
know the present candidates just as
well as I do Each citizen has ex-
actly the same right and the same
duty in an election I would resent
any interference with MY right to
vote according to the dictates of
MY conscience
"It would be impertinent for roe
to offer unsolicited advice to others
particularly as to a candidate who
is as well known to them as to me
"There Is one place where I agree
100 per cent with the Socialist I
had rather vote for what I want
and not get it than to vote for what
I do not want Etna get It"
If Jack Walton can get any corn-
fort out of Campbell Russell's letter
he is welcome to it In vain re scan
o it for a word which would indicate
even faint-hearted support of Wal-
I ton He says only that the people
A
know Jack Walton as well as he
does and that advice from him
would be gratuitous We agree that
advice from anyone ought to be
wholly unnecessary in Walton's case
Everyone ought to know Walton's
complete unfitness for the Job But
the memory of people is short and
one-half the voters of the state
o were either not here or were chil-
u dren when Walton was making his
4 t
unsavory record Mr Russell expects
too much if he thinks that the
voters will know and remember
If Campbell Russell has changed
the opinion he once held of Walton's
unfitness for public office we invite
him to say so We will give his
avowal of allegiance space in this
column If he merely wishes to take
the position that he is now in private
life and does not want to be drawn
In as an active propagandist against
Walton we have no objection If we
created the impression that Mr Rus-
sell is active in an anti-Walton cam-
paign we are sorry We did not in-
tend to do that Wa merely quoted
- from the record
If we are not to be permitted to
quote what Cam said: if we cannot
evert quote from "The Cat" his
erstwhile official organ without be-
ing reproved will it be safe for us
to quote from his famous brief still
on file in the supreme court? Mr
'Russell then himself corporation
Pommissloner had won his case in
the supreme court His opponent
had filed a 40-page brief in support
tot his application for a rehearing
In reply Russell filed the following
brief: "Neither the law nor the
facts have cnanged since the former
hearing of this case" That was the
briefest brief ever filed in the su-
preme court
It Is peculiarly appropriate just
now Walton's case was heard in an
Impeachment case The sworn testi-
mony of witnesses established Wal-
ton's mental and moral unfitness
forpublie office beyond all doubt
This testimony was embalmed in the
off1:21a1 records Mr Russell then
vigorously fought Walton "Neither
the law nor the facts have changed
since the former hearing of this
case"
We might add that the court was
reasonably brief in deciding the ap-
plication in Cam Russell's case It
said merely: "Rehearing denied"
There is nothing in the Jack Walton
record to Justify any change in the
popular verdict We predict that in
November the voters will say: "Re-
hearing denied"

NEW YORK Sept 23—Donald T
Stewart editor of The Moose maga-
zine admitted at the trial of U S
Sen James J Davis today that he
did not print stories of Moose char-

poesible violation of the postal laws
It was the government's second
telling blow of the day in its effort
to convict Sen Davis supreme dic-
tator of the Moose of sending lottery
tickets through the mail and inter-
state commerce
Stewart repudiated two articles
that had appeared in his magazine
One asserted that Sen Davis ap-
proved every article the magazine
printed The other described a meet-
ing of Moose officials at which
Davis was represented as approving
the charity balls the government
contends were lotteries

Equinox Tilt With Slaughter
It's been fall sinie 2:18 a m today
At that time the sun crossed the equator and a few hours later
Weatherman J P Slaughter "crossed" the old-fashioned weather

they were in for "equinoctial I

f0opyrIght 1912 by United Pre)
SAN FRANCISCO Sept 23—
Franklin D Roosevelt's attitude
towards progressives and pro-
gressivism was praised here today
by U S Sen Hiram Johnson lead-
er of California's Republican pro-
gressive element and running mate
of Theodois Roosevelt in the Bull
Moose rebellion of 1912
"The attitude of Mr Roosevelt is
in sharp contrast to that Mr Hoover
has maintained towards progressiv-
ism" Johnson said commenting on
the Democratic presidential nom-
inee's speech at Sacramento yes-
terday in which be invited Republi-
can progressives to align with the
Democratic presidential campaign
Recall 1016 'Snub'
Johnson's statement was regarded
as significant by political observers
who recalled the defeat of Hughes
by California's vote in 1916
Hughes aroused Johnson's apathy
if not hostility by a reported snub
with the now recognized result that
Wilson carried the state which de-
cided the presidential election
Hoover and Johnson belong to
different Republican camps in Cali-
fornia Johnson however hereto-
fore has made no definite move
which might be construed to release
his strong following from allegiance
to the party 's candidate
The Democratic presidential nomi-
nee met with party leaders to out-
line a campaign designed to attract
not only the progressive vote of
President Hoover's home state but
of the nation as well He was sched-
uled to deliver two campaign
speeches here during the day
Roosevelt openely bid for the ac-
tive support of Johnson in an ad-
dress before 10000 persons who
greeted him when his special train
paused in Sacramento last night on
Its way to San Francisco The gov-
emor's friends felt that Johnson
might actively aid his campaign in
the interest of a "new deal in gov-
ernment" and the "forgotten man"
Hope of Open Backing Slight
Political observers expressed the
opinion however that Jo'inson
would not come out openly for
Roosevelt but would aid in a sym-
pathetic manner by declaring at
every opportunity against the
Hoover administration
The New York governor was greet-
d by more than 50000 cheering per-
sons upon his arrival here last night

tered habitues of the waterfront
