for a franchise for some one else
1 There is a great deal of deceit be-
ing resorted to in an effort to get for
nothing siimething which might be
sold to the Oklahoma Natural for
a great deal of money Which the
people would ultimately pay
The attitude of this column is to
try to prevent any fooling of the
public We do not urge anyone to
follow our advice in this matter
We might be prejudiced We may be
thinking wrong All we suggest is
that the people think the problem
throtigh and be sure that they act
with a knowledge of all the facts
and the difficulties involved Then
If they wish to undertake municipal
ownership we will do all in our
power to help make it successful
To help clear the atmosphere we
are going to divide the question to
be settled on Oct 27 into two parts:
First should Oklahoma City go into the gas business? Second is it best
to give the Oklahoma Natural a
franchise? In the next few days at 1
our leisure we will discuss the mu-
nicipal ownership proposition in the
hope of helping clear up that sub-
ject We say frankly that we see
objections to it which make us
against such an undertaking The
public must judge whether or not
our reasoning is sound after we
have analyzed the question the best
we can
With that question out of the
way we will before the election dis-
cuss the Oklahoma Natural's pro-
posal and give our readers our rea-
sons for our attitude on that matter
There is some sensible course to
pursue if we can find it That
course should be predicated on
sound sense and the public welfare
Preconvinced prejudices formed
Without a full knowledge of the
facts should not control our atti-
tude The subject should be ap-
proached with an open mind and
we should go where logic and the
public interest leads us

A 'Dirty Mess'
"Take a long time to get this
mess cleaned up" he tells visitors
who came in to look at the scene
where Earl Quinn was sentenced
to die
"But at that it's lonesome to-
day without those people here"
He points to empty mute chairs
"There" he says "is where Quinn
sat The mother and father of the
Griffith iisters sat there The

-
Upstairs in the jury dormitory
were 13 rumpled beds in a dou-
ble row Here Jurors had rolled
and tossed with jargon and Am

eeliñg thrbogh their tired brains
Here slept the men who decided
that Quinn should die for murders
of two sisters on a- lonely road
near 'Eonkawa Dec 28

were pushed back askew
Plainly nothing had been
touched since the jurors go f up
suddenly and marched down to
the courtroom to say "Death in

Western Service Delays
Whether the Western Service Cor-
poration will openly enter the fight
against Oklahoma Natural had not
become definite today Western
Service wrested franchises from
Oklahoma Natural in bitter cam-
paigns at Guthrie and Shawnee re-
cently It has made an offer here
due to be acted on by the council
after the Oct 27 vote
The organization led by Hogan
and Ira Finley has stated it is not
in favor of any other company but
simply is opposing Oklahoma Nat-
tuml Canavan pointed out today that
voting the new franchise would not
bar a municipal plant Under the
contract the city may purchase the
Oklahoma Natural system any time
In the next three years even if a
new franchise is voted
Neither is the franchise an ex-
clusive monopoly for this is pro-
hibited by state law said Canavan
