The people at a discount house told me that I had
won a sewing machine, but when I went to get the
machine I learned I would have to take a service policy
that would cost $130 a year for 10 years. They tell me
I can’t have the machine without the policy. Can you do
something about this? H.J.
No, because this only bears out what the Better
Business Bureau has been warning the public about for
years: you never get anything for nothing. The BBB says
the terms of winning the sewing machine calls for buy-
ing the service policy and the letters to the winners
have made this very clear.

My husband took out what he thought was a $2,000
life insurance policy in 1958, but when he died of a heart
attack recently the company would not pay me any-
thing. What can you do about this? Mrs. M. H. jr.
We took this up with Bob C. Lamirand, director of
claims for the state insurance commissioner, and he has
been in touch with the insurance company.
The company replied that it stated on the front of
this policy that it provided benefits for loss of life, limb,
sight or time by accidental bodily injuries and for loss
of time by sickness. The company says you were paid
$163.33 for the 49 days your husband was disabled before
he died, but that is all you are due under the terms of
the policy.

that will haul them out of
lunar orbit and send them
gliding at 24,500 miles an
hour down a corridor to-
ward a tiny, 36-mile win-
dow they must enter into
the earth’s atmosphere.
Failure of this engine
would leave them stranded
in space with about 10
days of oxygen supply left
to them. Afterward, the
spacecraft would become
a lifeless, perpetual satel-
lite of the moon.
The last big hazard is
the return to earth along a
narrow trail never before
blazed by man. If the men
strayed from the corridor,
the midcourse corrections
did not get them back,
they could ricochet off the
earth’s atmosphere and
back out into space to re-
main.
NASA officials were con-
fident this would not hap-
pen. They noted that two
unmanned Apollo ships
successfully executed the
re-entry maneuver, using
only automatic controls. If
the automatic devices
should fail, the astronauts
could take over.
The attitude of the
moonport was, as always,
cocky and gung-ho.
Shrugging off the risks
of this pioneering venture,
Borman, the spacecraft
commander said, “Hell,
this is a risky business.”

Hunt became president of
the airline after the death of
Pigman in the 1966 crash,
worst air disaster in Oklaho-
ma history. He formerly was
vice president in charge of
American Airlines’ Tulsa
maintenance operations.
The crash killed 77 sol-
diers and six crewmen who
were on an American Flyers
charter flight from Califor-
nia to North Carolina.
Law suits totaling more
than $14 million were filed
against American Flyers as
a result of the crash. All 16
of the suits, including about
$11 million in claims filed in
Oklahoma cases, were con-
solidated in October in the
federal court at Muskogee.
The First Grant Corp, of
Cleveland, Ohio, bought 80
percent of the airline in Au-

retaining the remainder of
the stock. The deal did not
