hundreds more. Rattle between the
opposing sir forces would be stazed
over the tract of sea separating the
surface fleets.
The air force winning to victory,
naval experts say, would ensure
victory for its surface fleet unless
there was an overwhelming prepon-

Bombers to Attack, Too
Then, too. th* bombing planes
would be free to carry out their
operations against the enemy, which
would be obliged to divide its atten-
tion against sir as well as shell
fire and torpedo attacks.
Some American naval experts con-
tend thar the American navy now
is at least five years ahead of any
other in th* matter of equipping its
fishting craft with planes. They say
thia la the result of fourteen years
of experiment, beginning with a
fo’castle deck runway on the old
cruiser Pennnylvania, now the Pitts-
burgh, and leading to th* revolinz
catapult now in use, the secret of
which is guarded carefully.
Foreign nations regard this devel-
co-ordination between the two
groups when ths ship is in nction. i
Ths air men in spotting shots and 1
sending their radio messages for
correction known exactly the prob-
l*ms in the fire control room which |
olmervers and spotters from nir- l
plane carriers could not know.
Another advantage of having the
planes with the fighting ships is
that they ear go into action taster l
as the airplane carriers are so
fragile that they must be kept far
behind the battle craft so they
would not come within the line of ,
action. I
