“People just don’t believe squir-
rels can cause this much trouble,
but they do (cause problems) when
they hit those wires," he said.
Power was out for three-and-a-
half hours that night.
This outage was the second time
in four months that the entire Man-
nford grid has gone down.
The results are unscientif
ic and represent the opin
ion of those who visit the
website and participate in
the online poll. There
were 30 respondents to
the poll.
In early December, the town went
black on a cold winter evening
when a faulty low-side lighting ar-
restor malfunctioned.

not work. However, installation of
the new generator is not complete.
“They're supposed to be out,
sometime today to finish connect-
ing it,” said Mannford Town Ad-
ministrator Mike Nunneley.
Nunneley has repeatedly said
squirrels are wreaking havoc on
the town’s power system.

A squirrel met its untimely end
last Wednesday in Mannford.
The small rodent was traveling
across an electric line behind
Cimarron Telephone Company
around 7:25 a.m. when it hit a wire
that sent 7,600 volts of electricity
through its body and knocked out
the entire Mannford power grid.
“It just went out,” said Mannford
Chief Dispatcher John Hall, who
was dispatching when the power
went out.
Electricity was restored at 8:44
a.m.
The police department used a
generator on the back of a Mann-
ford fire truck to power only the
necessary equipment-the police
radio, 911 phone and OLETS termi-
nal that is used to check license
plates and driver’s licenses.
The town had purchased a new
generator after a blackout late last

The process of making ra-
