ered with a pistol he immediately
raised his pistol and fired, killing
McDonald almost instantly. Upon
examanition it was found that the
deceased had no pistol and that
his fright at being met with in
an out of the way place caused
him to do what he did in ordering
an officer of the law to halt whose
duty calls him to just such places,
where hardened criminals are
liable to be lurking instead of
beardless boys who do not ap-
preciate the danger they are in.
McDonald’s relatives live in To-
peka where his body was for-
warded. He was at the time of
his death employed at the Santa
Fe round house having only ar-
rived a few days ago. His parents
are said to be wealthy.
He came in the front door tim-
idly clutching a leather packet
in one hand and a pad of papers
in the other. He couldn’t have
been more than eleven or twelve
and he had a burr haircut and
was grinning shyly. He acted |
frightened and yet he approached ,
the editor’s desk boldly.
“How much is your paper?”1
he asked.
“Per copy or for a year’s sub-:
scription?”
He acted confused, but not for
long. He unzipped his leather pac-,
ket and said bravely, “I want it
for a year."
He dug out two dollars and
waited for his receipt. He gave
the name of Gene Gordon.
He had to be asked for another
50c and he started fumbling into
his leather packet again. Then
he took his receipt and left.
