much water to drink.
Unlike many animals, peo-
ple lack an adequate thirst
mechanism and usually
underestimate how much
water is needed to replinish
body stores.
The only sure way of
knowing how much water
to drink is to weigh before
and after exercise. Virtual-
ly all the weight that is lost
during a single exercise
session is from persipira-
tion.
The general recommen-
dation is to drink one to two
cups of water before any
virorous exercise. During
competition or prolonged
exercise such as running or
cycling, one-half to one cup
of water should be drunk
about every 15 to 20
minutes.
Plain cool or cold water
is best for replacing body
water because it is quickly
absorbed. Juices, soft
drinks and other liquids
containing more than 2.5
rounding his yard.
Although the gasoline
poured from the mower at
the time, Hunt escaped
without a scratch.
