TOO LATE TO PARDON OWEN
The Times believes in law and order and can find no
xcuse for mob law But the hysteric attempt of Gov-
ernor Robertson In an attempt to punish the members
of the inohs that lynched Tom OwenB at Tulsa and Charllp
Chandler at Oklahoma City makes many of our good
Cltixens fee like applauding the work of those men who
by that act made It Impossible for Governor Robertson
or any of lii fellow-officials Srom banding out a pardon
to either of tbcae arch criminals
-sl- Covernor Robertsoncan blame himself by his orgy
Of pardoning criminals and no one else for the results
“As you sow so shall ye reap" la applicable In this
case and instead of raising such a huulilmloo over the
death of these two fiends be should study his own
heart and see if he too is not to a large extent respon-
Olble for the considerable amount of lawlessness of tiio
elate He has gone out of the way to turn loose on com-
munities of the state hardened criminals whom the Jurors
of courts had decreed should be confined that they might
be prevented from ravaging the communities in which
they lived His promisrous pardoning of criminals Is in
po small way responsible for the spread of depredation
Bad crimo through- it the coun'ry He should at least
be conslstant and get right himself helm i criticising or
Judging others It Js just such officials that will cause
the people Jo repud'gi the prevent orgunizulinn In the
democratic party and their policies n the coming election
In November For no better service can a member of the
democratic party do its own organization titan nv voting
out of power the present political ring that Is telling them
how to think and eat Even it Is getting too ninth for
many of the prominent democrats who have never voted
anything but lio straight party ticket for lo these many
years ami who now say frankly that they will support the
Republicans this fall In the hopes that they will hu able to
help clean their own party of the Incubus that they are
Unable to rid -tbeuiHelves of in their p rty They have
tried to do SO within but have failed ami now their only
hope is to try io do It without As wo said before
Governor Robertson together with bis numerous acting
governors are largly responsible for tile present disre-
gard for law and order
TALKED TOO MUCH
It Is evident that Governor "Jim my" ( ox like many
another small boy has talked too much and thereby got
himself Into a whole Jumping at something to divert the
public mind from the League of Nations covenants
(without the dotting of an “I” or the crossing of a “t”)
he has attempted to make the people believe that the
Republicans are trying t0 buy the presidency and
so doing corrupt the country But this attempt has
untied ou that platform and for the candidate pledged t
carry it Into effect Mr Ilarr eld's nomination by Oklaho-
ma republicans for the United States senate has made the
leatie of nations covenants the one Issue In this state
He accepts it snd while confronted by a democratic-
plurality boldly asserts bis position snd will meet the
vital question candidly forcefully and with confidence in
the result
The democratic candidate for the aenate who de-
clared In the primary campaign that those who opposed
tne league as brought back from Veraailteg were not pa-
triotic citizens baa seen great light More thanSO-
000 Oklahoma democrats opposed to the Versailles cove-
nants voted for Senator Gore There were eo msny of
that beleff that it required a great political organizaiion
and vast expenditure of money and the power of federal
sn state democratic patronage to overcome them
Mr Rerrle and his friends foresee that a stralghtout
contest on the league of nation covenants will result In
his defeat Undeniably the people of Oklahoma do not
favor these covenants In fact the democrat of tb state
are against them While it l urged that not nil of the
80000 democrats who supported the candidacy of Senator
Gore are opposed to the league ofiwtloni pact as writ-
ten It Is also true that not all who are opposed to them
voted for Senator Gore and the score Is about evenly
It would be more exact perbape to state that be would
balanced In that particular
Mr Ferris would like to forget the league covenants
like f0 rthe people of Oklahma to forget them until after
the November eleetlon Thatwould enable him to carry
the democratic vote of the stite and secure his election
But As To Tha Rssult:
The league covenants will come before the next sen-
ate If Ferris Is the next senator be will according to
his signed statement when entering upon his senatorial
primary candidacy stand for the Versailles document as
written
If Harreld Is the senator he will stand for an Ameri-
cunlzed revision of the covenants as pledged by hit party
ai:U as shown by his record as a candidate and his record
r( a member of the national house of representatives
Mr Ferris would plunge us Into financing and back-
ing every trivial European quarrel Into sending our boys
across the seas every time some potentate of a miniature
eastern European nation bad the colic
Harreld would stand for Americanist strong pow-
erful to speak peace and capable or maintaining her bal-
ance under any and all circumstances
No one denies that three fourths of Oklahoma's vot
lug strength is opposed to the Versailles treaty covenant
Only the bias of partzanshlp could elect a United states
senator favorable to tbera
It Is almost unbelievable that the people of Oklahoma
truly and loyally American will heeause of partisan bias
rally to the standard of a candidate for the high offiee of
I'nlted slates senate who ha admitted he knows noth-
ing about the issue other than what the president may tell
him from time to time
The elet lop f Congressman Harrebl to the senate
is Imperative unless iho voters of Oklahoma desire the
fate to take no part in iho settlement of (he most vita!
issue that has ever confronted the people of thlc republic
Congressman Ilarreld's declaration that he will stand
on this Issue and that he will champion Americanism
against International delusion and dream of a world cm
Pire is Inspiring and should meet with the support of the
intelligent men aud women of all political faiths ’
