A Moon Party
A moon party or a star party or
possibly it might be called both was
given by Mr Lester Guthrie to his
friends on Thursday night of last
week The eclipse of the moon was
taken as a cause for calling the young
people together but if reports are
true a general good time was enjoyed
more than the eclipse the latter be-
ing an excuse to stay late
Frank Reynolds’ teloscope
'
was
brought Into requisition and a regu
lar scientific study was made both of
the moon and the man The rumor
that the moon Is composed chiefly- of
green cheese was verified by these
scientists and they also state tjiat the
man is undoubtedly of the genus

A Letter from Florida
Mr Gilbert is In receipt of a very
interesting letter from his sister Mrs
Hanscom in Florida As it describes
the country it will probably be of
interest to some of our readers Mr
Gilbert kindly consented to let Us

My dear brother and all:—
‘ George lias gone down street
and I fcm alone so will write and tell
you of 'yur tripGtand something of
Florida - )
We left home Thursday morning at
9:58 via Pa It was warm and the
sun shining brightly The beautiful
weather continued all the way In
Washington the road runs very close
to the Capitol building set-we 'had a'
very good view of it After leaving
Washington we rode for many miles
on the shore of the Cheaspe&kc Bay
and I cannot tell you how beautiful
it was A July afternoon could not
have been more fair The sun on the
water which reflected the tint of the
clouds the yellow sandbanks on the
farther shore which we could see at
times together with the green setting
of the pine trees was most beautiful
indeed
Our pullman was likeapalace The
roadbed to Richmond was line so wc
could enjoy every bit of our Journey
and at night did not feel at all weary
from traveling When wo awoke
yesterday morning we were among
the cypress swamps of South Carolina
lOHave soen pictures and read of
them but one needs to see to realize
their vastness I was reminded of
the plains in a way only instead of
an arid plain there were trees trees
trees and much of the time ' you
would think they were growing out
of a lake instead of the ground 1
When we came to the Southern
Pines the scene changed again They 1
are a light shade of green not dark
like the pines in Maine or the hem- vt' J -11 j
locks of New York And we noticed V ©TQFlIlctry RUG
that where ever there were southern
pines tlie swamp land was dry pro-
bably because they absorb so much
moisture The cypress trees were
beautiful to me because of tlielr drap-
ing of Spanish moss Some trees
were hardly visible because of it It
is a dull gray and hangs so gracefully
as it is swayed back and forth by the
breeze We also saw holly laurel and
live oak which is perhaps the most
symetrical tree of the South As we ' J J 1' VJ ti v-unn
neared the south the underbrush was 1 llll 1IU MllffPOll
mostly scrub palm We saw several
cotton fields and many gardens with
j IcJUce beets celery etc about half t
ibwn

The negro cabins seemed to be the
only decoration by the way Possibly
an acre of clearingjn the woods boards
put up around the cabin and tlitf
little garden patch in the style of a
picket fence A razor-back hog one
mule a few chickens and a cow con-
stituted all of their earthly belong-
ings Tlie doors of the cabins were
wide open and the windows boarded
up probably for the lack of glas3
The old mammy and her half dozen
pickaninies waved tlielr "God Speed’’
to us as the train rolled by
Oxen are used very much It seem
ed rather primitive to see a man I
driving an ox hitched to a buggy in j
which was placed an ordinary high
backed chair for a seat The poor
beast was tied into the thills Instead
of being hitched for all sorts of old
clothes were used for a harness One
can not help but sympathize with the
poor natives when you see how little
they know of real life and how very
small their horizon is
Our train was late and did not '
reach Jacksonville until nearly 4 pm I
Dr Drakefield met us and we took a
bus (which Is a double seated surrey
here) and came to our place of enter-
tainment -
Jacksonville is a beautiful city
composed largely of northern people
George lias just returned and is quite
delighted with it The children are
playing on the porches and in the
street bare headed and with no wraps
We are very pleasantly situated in
a private boarding house The man
of the house was born at Weathers-
field Springs Isn’t that strange?
How small the world is after all
The streets are largely paved with
brick The Congregational church is
in a fine residental part of the city
Across from the church is a lovely
I park It was beautiful yesterday
evening as we walked through with
a fountain playing the palm trfees
cedar shrubs etc and pansies and
violets in bloomj The side walks are
wide with a grass plot of about twelve
feet between the walk and curb and 1
palm trees all along the border i
Jacksonville has a population of
50000 nearly half of which is black
'Enough of this! I
How we did enjoy your nice1 letter
What a whopper you wrote Alice
She let me read the letter You wait
young man until I come again It
will bo a very cold day when I do and
yoq will get such a trouncing and
standing In the eorner that you will
have cause to remomber
I must c!oj6 and take a stroll down
street Write often to jour little
