Dear Sir-
I notice in 1 e Cellos Nows that
6omo ol the good citizens of that
town are much stirred up over- a
recent letter which appeared in
the above named paper signed by
a Mr Margason in which he
stated that I had promised pro-
tection to sojiic bootleggers whom
he claims were ’working in that
vicinity In the last issuoof this
same paper I am accused of hat ing
been intoxicated while iu Ce&tos

(now and have always done since
becoming ft deputy sheriff to the
best of my ability and I challenge
anyone to point to an instance in
which I have offered protection to
any one wishing to violate the
law
As to the second accusation
that I was intoxicated oh the 2Ph

those who make this accusation
get together ‘ in some convenient
place "and on their oaths ’’swear

about as sensible a thing fot’thein
to de 4s swear'’ that’ ‘they 'tliink

benefit of apy who ma be led to

false and that I did not’ even’'see

any liquor that day or while
there
-1 feer that these facts should be
published in justice to myself
and to my friends who may’ have
read these articles in the Cestos

these facts and not’ with guesses
such as some of the good law
abiding citizens of Cestos use

COUNTY OKLXIIOMA THURSDAY MAY 20 1003
Fire
$13000
The alarm of fire was given
about nine o’clock Tuesday morn
ing and it was soon learned that
the Reick furniture stoic was in
llames In a very few moments
the entire - populace - of Oakwood
was out to lend their ns-is-tnnco
but it only took a few minutes to
sec that the Odd Fellow buildirg
was also doomed ’and all efforts
to savo it proved of no avail
The Odd Fellows building was
occupied by the Oakwpod Merc
Co who had by far the’ best stock
of goods in town estimated to be
worth $7000 and was covered by
about $1000 insurance The
building was valued at $1000-
and was insured at $2000 The
lieick building and stock was
valued at $2000 and lud an in-
surance of -only $759 on the
entire stock and bffilding The
entire loss is $13000 and the
whole insurance on botn buildings
and stocks was only 6750 making
a clear loss of 6250’ For a time
it seemed as if the entire town
was doomed the barber snop on
the east began to smoke even
with a ebowrer of water being
poured on it’ and hut for some
wet’ quilts being brought by some
of the thoughtful ladies the re
maining buildings on that 'street
would have been' lost This sad
stroke to our town should learn
us the need of a water ‘ systen'i of
some kind We must prepare
some kind We must ’prepare
for" these nnsfortuiles for’ tljfcy
are sure to come sooner or later

A treasurer is to be elected this-
year His blank bpnd is sent to the
plerk
The clerk must be sure to get the
notices-of th'cAnnual Meeting post
ed in due time for the meeting on
June 1st Do not forget the date
Blank Notices for calling the
Amiual Meeting were sent to the
Clerk in advance of other1 blanks
supplies Every blank' nee’ded' for
the coming- year '-'except the
Teacher’s Term Report is being
sent to each clerk
The assessed valuation of your
district for 1909 cannot be sent you
before the annual metting for the
county Equalization Board does
meet until J une 7th a W’eek after
the meeting Your valuation for
1908 w-ijl have to he taken as a
basis
The clerk must be sure to get the
name anil age of every child be-
tween the ag’es of 0 and 21 who was
in the district on Jan 15 and the
name of every one who lias
moved from another state into the
district since- that date If they
were not over 21 years of ag-e on
Jan loth they must be counted
Remember the board must meet
live days befor? the annual meet-
ing to prepare the annual reports
oflhe clerk and treasurer for the
meeting and to sec that'they are
correct and agree in every part-
icular Remember this and do not
wait until the day of the annual
meeting- and then expect to make
them up
In order to axoid errors the
treasurers should not draw- any
money from the county tieasurer
I
after Mav 23 The law requites the
treasurer to prepaie his report five
days before the meeting and when
preiuned and accepted by the board
no changes can be made in it b
drawing more money from the
county treasurer Kindly bear this
n mind
In order that all districts which
will have to leyy more than five
mills may vote and act intelligently
the Co Supt would advise that all
business he transacted at the
annual meeting except the voting
of the t-iy levy and that the meet-
ing adjourn until a later date when
the Kqtuilued Asse-ised Valuation
may be available Ibis would en-
able such districts to vote In-
telligently on the levy Of course
any other business could also he
postponed -until this same date
The Animal Meeting may adjourn
to a later date no more than Unity
days distant
There was not a district in the
county but what hail cithera long-
er term or paid a better salary the
past year tlmii the year before
In too many districts the
was increased without regard to
value or worth of the teacher
employed Some districts voted
pay to Fifty Dollars and paid it
regardless of whether first or tliiid
ade teachers ware secured IJy
all mean do-not nr-uke-sti-ch a mis-
take this year If yon pay -more
get a better teacher but if you can-
not get the good teachers then by
all means pay less Many teachers
were over paid last year and a
number of our best ones far under
pad We must make a difference
in salary between pur good and
poor teachers or else we will soon
have no good ones -to pay- There
is no inducement for a good teach-
er to teach when the sixteen or
seventeen year old beginner can
get as good pnd sometimes a
better- salary A change is
necessary else we will have all poor
teachers in a very short time V
