rive from the coast. Several
years following the battle, the
Pharoah signed one of the first
international peace treaties.
As a display of sincerity,
Ramesses married the daugh-
ter of the Hittite king.
Ramesses the Great’s death
probably occurred at the age
of 92. Following his death,
mummification of his body
and other ritualistic prepara-
tions lasted for 70 days. After-
wards. his body was conveyed
by royal barge up the Nile to
the Valley of the Kings near
Thebes for final burial. Thus
ended the second largest
reign in Egyptian history.
Today, the empire created
by Ramesses has endless his-
toric fascination for people all
over the world. Even in the
dynasties that followed his
own, he had stamped his im-
age upon those times as
Ramesses the Great. His
name would endure as a
synonym for pharoah through
a line of ten kings covering a
period of 150 years.
Exquisitely crafted gold
jewelry is featured in the ex-
hibition, highlightted by an
almost unbelievable 19 pound
gold necklace. Also in the ex-
hibition are Ramesses strik-
ing coffin lid and other funer-
ary artifacts are featured; in-
cluding a sarcophagus,
beautifully carved and
painted coffins, a canopic jar
stopper and the door to a bu-
rial chamber.
The first known clock in the
world, the Karnak clepsydra,
will also be exhibited and re-
fleets the high level of mathe-
matical and scientific skill
achieved by the ancient Egyp-
tians.
Other choice items include
a rare silver and gold vessel
with a goat shaped handle,
representative of the height of
design and artistry of the
ancient Egyptian goldsmith.
A room of intricately crafted
gold vessels and jewelry will
awe and impress the exhibi-
tion visitor.

The focal point of this tour
would be be the “Ramesse,
The Great” Exhibition. This
collection is larger and more
monumental in size and sig-
nificance than the King Tut
exhibit. Memphis is one of
just five cities hosting the ex-
hibit.
Ramesses the Great, the
Pharoah associated with
accounts of the Hebrew Ex-
odus, ruled from ancient
Memphis on the Nile. In 1279
B.C.. Rameses ascended the
throne, beginning a remark-
able reign that would last 66
years. He built magnificent
monuments, temples obel-
isks, and colossal statues
throughout all Egypt. He
turned back a wave of power-
ful troops during the battle of
Kadesh and many historians
believe Ramesses was the
pharoah of the Exodus.
Ramesses is remembered as
a prolific builder of temples.
Many of the remaining monu-
ments in Egypt were built by
him. In war, as in life, Rames-
ses was fiercely ambitious.
Caught in a surprise attack by
the Hittites at Kadesh,
Ramesses leapt into his war
chariot and held off the attack
