DENVER (UPD Colorado
coach Eddie Crowder doesn’t plan
to use his Oklahoma high school
contacts to rebuild the Buffaloes
Crowder said he hoped to follow
the example of his former boss
Oklahoma coach Bud Wilkinson
and build his team around a nu-
cleus of Colorado boys
He told a news conference here
Friday that such a policy would
help gain the allegiance of the
state and of alumni groups
"I realize that because of popu-
lation this might not be entirely
possible” he said “but I will try
to keep out-of-state recruiting tc
a minimum”
Crowder was backfield coach at
Oklahoma and was a key man in
the Sooners’ recruiting program
before he was named Colorado
coach on Jan 2
He appeared at his first meet-
ing with the Colorado press with
his chief assistant Rudy Feld-
man a fellow former assistant at
Oklahoma and Big Eight Confer-
ence Commissioner Wayne Duke
Crowder did not specify the type
of football program he would run
at Colorado but indicated he
would stress strong defensive
play
‘‘Football starts with defense”
he 3aid
He said his offense would em-
ploy variations of the split-T
"We will throw the ball as much
as the talent permits” he said
"The better we throw the ball the
more we’ll throw it”
Crowder said be would be look
ing for players with speed and
that size would be of secondary
but still critical importance
