Wives Often
Look Shabby
In Suburbia
By MRS. MURIEL LAWRENCE
(NEA Staff Writer)
A Mend took me recently to a
Japnnane lha Ceremony.
The woman who officiated waa
aa delicately lovely aa the cups
aha handled. But beauty was not
her power. Her power wea die
reverence with which she perform-
ed her ancient ritual of service.
Each tool was lifted given its
moment of gontlenees and then
gently unhurriedly restored to its
place. Each of bar moves
tainad bar total interest and de-
votion. The effect of this deep respect
for hor own actions was the crea-
tion of serenity la her graceful
prueence no disordered emotion
was possible.
I waa remembering her today as
I read a letter that contains this
passage: T want to go back to my
work and my husband wont let
ma. la It wrong for me to want to
make money by the skill my edu-
cation gave me7 My husband can't
afford the many advantages my
eamlnga could give our two child-
ren. If I can do something better
than housework why shouldnt IT
There la nothing better any wo-
man can do than create serenity
for her man and her children.
Because men think 1ft splendid
to buy lota of material filings is
no reason why wa should. They
have to think 1ft fine. They are
producers of ideas and things. We
are not. Wa are producers of
people.
It la a responsibility not to be
lightly discarded for a money-
making skill.
I have a suggestion for my cor-
respondent Tonight lot's turn getting dinner
into a ceremony.
Lets give devotion to every ac-
tion aa we taka it Instead of grab-
bing the potato to bn period loft
lift it slowly. Since our minds are
given to what we're doing ere
dose out resentment of our hus-
bands pay check and ambition to
surpass it with one of our own.
So our hands becoma gentle with
the potato file water tap the table
silver.
We find ourselves growing quiet
our action no longer disordered
with agitated envy of money-earning
man but ordered by respect
for ourselves aa the Nourisher the
Woman. For thats who wa arc
every time wa pari a potato or put
a pot on the stove.
In situations like my correspon-
dent's the choice is seldom be-
i a Job and homamaldng.
Hearty always it goes much deep-
Ifs the choice between male
ambtiiousness and womanly ac-
ceptance; between envy of men
and respect for ourselves; between
lust for material things and pance.
And though I cant possibly tell
another woman whether or not
ahe should leave her children to
buy them more things I do know
that we women cannot aolva our
problems by male solutions.
The Japanese Tee Ceremony I
attended seemed a moat dramatic
illustration of feminine power.

When file American housewife
gets dolled up to go to a party she
manages to look as carefully
groomed and aa chic as her work-
ing sisters.
But tha way she looks during
bar working day la often a different
story.
One fashion authority who Is
herself a housewife "views with
alarm the state of beauty in suburbia.
ROGERS-HOLCOMB
WEDDING PARTY
FETED AT DINNER
Speaking before tha New York
Fashion Group Mrs. Charlotte
Montgomery a New York mer-
chandising consultant charged:
Too many homemakers spend
large pieces of their working hour
looking meagy unkempt their
hair unattractively undone or in
pin curls. They wear no lipstick
and dress as If they were about
to scrub out a hen-house."
Theres a lot of truth in Mia.
Montgomerys charge. You dont
have to visit housewives in their
own homes or yards to prove it.
Leek About At The Supermarket
All you have to do la drop by
file neighborhood supermarket end
take a good long look at tha wom-
en who pass by.
For every woman dressed neat-
ly in a housedress or skirt and
blouse with hair combed and
wearing flash lipstick you'U find
at least three women in shorts
who dont have the figure for them
at least one In pin curls at least
one whose hair looks as though it
hasnt been combed in a week
and at least one in a rumpled
dress and the shoes she wears to
water the lawn.
It almost seems to be that file
more labor-saving devices make
the job of housekeeping a relative-
ly clean and easy Job file mealier
housewlvei look.
When grandma beat ruga by
hand scrubbed her clothes on a
washboard and baked the family
bread he at least put on a dean
apron when she finished a many
job.
And though grandpa may not
have relished the sight at her in
curler at bedtime at least the
rest of the world didn't have to
see her that way.
