That was John Glenn's message a few minutes
after Friendship 7 reached orbit on Feb. 20, 1962.
Those words thrilled America and Glenn became
the first American to orbit the Earth.
His death on Thursday, at the grand age of 95.
reminds us of a time when the word "hero" was
not used loosely, and when space exploration was
bold and exciting. Glenn was that American hero,
not just an image created by a marketing compa
ny.
The highly decorated Marine flew 59 combat
missions during World War II and 90 more during
the Korean War. He left NASA in 1964, but he
served his country again when he was elected in
1974 to the U.S. Senate, representing Ohio He
served four six-year terms. Once out of Congress,
he went on to become the oldest person to fly in
space. In 1998, Glenn spent nine days aboard the
space shuttle Discovery ottering himself up as a
guinea pig for science. He was 77 years old.
Glenn fought for NASA and tor national defense.
Champions of both have been sadly lacking in
Washington, D.C.. for a long time.
In an NPR interview. Francis French, the author
of books on the space program's early days,
remarked that Glenn was one of those people
who's going to stay in the history books.
"And even the most cynical of history readers is
going to go. T his guy actually is what everybody
says he was.”’
He was "exactly at the right place at the right
time for when America needed somebody to not
only become the first American to orbit the Earth,
but to actually project what it meant for America
to put a person into space." French said.
Glenn's name still makes our hearts surge with
pride. Farewell to a man who was our bridge to
the universe.
