Storm sets
record for
March rainfall
(AP) - Another wave of
storms pushed into Oklahoma
on Friday, dumping more rain
into swollen creeks and rivers
and at one time knocking out
power to more than 8,600 peo-
ple in a state battered by recent
tornadoes.
Oklahoma Gas and Electric
Co. reported electricity had
been restored to all but about
1,800 customers - including
about 1,600 in Ada in east
central Oklahoma - late Friday
night. About 200 OG&E cus-
tomers in the Oklahoma City
area were also without power.
There were no immediate
reports of deaths or serious
injuries.
Slow-moving thunder-
storms dropped more than
three inches of rain in areas
as they moved north into the
state from Texas. Oklahoma
City had already received
3.5 inches of rain - the most
for any March day on record
in the city's history. National
Weather Service forecaster
Chris Sohl said.
The previous record rain-
fall in March was 2.84 inches
on March 28, 1988, Sohl said.
The rainfall pushed Okla-
homa City to 8.01 inches for
the month, breaking the record
for the entire month of March
that was also set in 1988 with
7.85 inches, Sohl said.

Holten’s have found a wa
to try to make up for that losi,
time by investing in an array-
of new electronic devices,
including a new laptop for
John, and a digital camera,
digital movie camera, and a
computer upgrade for
DeAnn. With the new equip-
ment. DeAnn has been able
to document the children’s
activities so the entire family
can re-live important mile-
stones whenever they like. ,
"It's something we’ye
needed to do anyway.” sai
DeAnn.
Besides the obvious rea-
son of wanting to be back
home with his family, John
has another thing he is look-
ing forward to.
"He wants to see grass.”
said DeAnn. “He is tired of
rocks and sand.”
On a short leave to Qatar.
John and his buddies
delighted in walking on and
smelling patches of grass in
the city. With the recent rains
in Chickasha, John will most
likely have enough grass to
mow to keep him satisfied
for a long while.
Holten is tentatively
scheduled to leave for home
on April 10, but it will take a
week of travel and a mile of

new look on family time now.’
The family is happily
preparing for Holten’s
return.
“The kids and I have been
making “Welcome Home
signs,” said DeAnn. "And
church members have been
painting and fixing up the
inside of the house."
DeAnn is grateful for her
family at Trinity Church.
"I don't know how I
would have gotten through
this without my church fam-
ily ” she said. “They kept the
kids, mowed the lawn, fixed
things at the house, and they
never forgot to pray tor John
and for his safety. They were
always there; they never fiz-
zled out."
She said church members
send John packages every
week or so with updates
about life in Chickasha and
an assortment of goodies,
including favorite snacks,
books, tapes of church ser-
vices, golf balls, and copies
of the Oklahoman and the
Express-Star newspapers.
In turn, John’s detach-
ment sends out a monthly
newsletter to let families
know what is going on in
Afghanistan and to relate
funny stories and other
information.
""He’s not allowed to tell
us too much," said DeAnn.
“So it’s good to get that."
Although John is limited
as to what information he can
share with his family, he and
others involved in the wars in
Afghanistan and Iraq have a
decided advantage in being
able to communicate com-
pared to soldiers in the past.
For instance, John is able to
call DeAnn computer-to-
computer about once a week.
“We even have a web
cam." said DeAnn. “He gets
to see us, but because of
poor reception from
Afghanistan, we usually
can't see him. We know how
blessed we are to talk to each
other and see each other."
Because John has missed
the last year of Whitnie’s and
John Mark’s growing up.
