All but two
counties
declared ag
disaster areas
TULSA, Okla. (AP) -
Drought conditions have led
to a federal agricultural disas-
ter declaration in all but two of
Oklahoma's counties, opening
the way for low-interest loans
for farmers whose dry fields
have been scorched by heat
and high winds.
Rainfall since March 1
statewide is between 2.3 inch-
es and more than foot below
normal, according to the
National Agriculture Statistics
Service’s weekly crop weather
report, released Monday. The
U.S. Department of Agricul-
ture issued its disaster declara-
tion late last week as the
drought persisted.
“I think our big concern at
this point is going into the fall
wheat planting season -
there’s just no moisture there,"
said Sam Knipp, a spokesman
for the Oklahoma Farm
Bureau.
Another concern is the
potential for fire from a care-
lessly tossed cigarette or char-
coal spark from an outdoor
grill.
“I've known pastures where
farmers have lost winter feed
because of hay fires," Knipp
said.
In northeast Oklahoma
rainfall is more than 7 inches
below normal. Farther south,
it's even drier.
Oklahoma is typically hot
and dry in summer months.
However, this year's March-
through-May period in the
state ranked as the driest since
1921.
“If it doesn't rain pretty
soon - and there's nothing I
can see in the long-range fore-
cast that we're going to get a
whole lot of rain - then I think
a lot of our people are going to
be in dire straights," Knipp
said.
Farmers need rain in order
to grow the fall wheat that cat-
tle graze on in the winter.
Only Oklahoma's most
western Panhandle counties,
Cimarron and Texas, were not
named as agricultural disaster
areas.
The counties are assessed
by the USDA's Farm Service
Agency, which determines if
each has had at least a 30 per-
cent loss of a crop, said Rod
Wanger, an agriculture pro-
gram specialist for the FSA's
Oklahoma office.
More than 80 percent of
Oklahoma's topsoil moisture
is rated as short to very short
in the weekly crop weather
report.
