Her I the story of Ita discovery:
A florist in WlNoonsin reported to
tn I vanity of Wisconsin authorities
that carnations In his bolboue would
not thrive. They Deemed to go to
sluep and then finally die.'
Doctor A. H. Luckhardt and J. B.
Carter then students at the univer-
sity investigated and traced the
trouble to u gas Jet. -In
order to learn (he property
which produced the sleep they
chemically- took to pieces" the gas
goners tod by the flume from the Jet
dividing ft Into 14 component parts.
Each part wuu tested separately a
t6 1 the effect It produced upon the
carnation until finally they came
to' elhelhie. It put to' eleep and
finally killed tho flower. The gas
Jot u removed and the florist
again did a prafitublo 1mluess.
' But Luckhardt and Carter reasoned
that if the gaa would put a carnation
to aloep It might have sn intnreHtlng
effect upon a guinea pig. They tried
It and proved apparently a perfect
anaesthetic. A rabbit wu next made
