Associated Press Writer________
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)
— College professor Jim Boren
and Sen. Jim Inhofe taught their
primary foes a lesson in advanc-
ing to the November general
election: the name’s the name of
the game in Oklahoma politics.
Democrat Boren, who is seek-
ing to follow in famous cousin
David Boren’s footsteps as sena-
tor, defeated 18-year state
House member Don McCorkell,
who was recognized by his peers
for heavyweight legislation, but
whose name was little known
outside Tulsa.
Inhofe, a veteran of many po-
litical wars in Oklahoma, easily
disposed of Tulsa attorney Dan
Lowe in Tuesday’s primary.
In other key races, Wes
Watkins won his first test as a
Republican in the 3rd Congres-
sional District, while state Sen.
Darryl Roberts of Ardmore led
a four-man primary on the
Democratic side and Demo-
cratic state House Speaker Glen
Johnson of Okemah had an im-
pressive showing in the 2nd Con-
gressional District.
Boren got 55 percent of the
vote in the Democratic Senate

who is bidding for a full six-
year term.
Boren, a 70-year-old political
science professor in Tahlequah,
piled up heavy margins in the ru-
ral areas and captured the Okla-
homa City vote, while Mc-
Corkell won Tulsa.
David Boren’s resignation to
become president of the Univer-
sity of Oklahoma paved the way
for Inhofe to be elected two
years ago.
Jim Boren, onetime political
satirist, predicted his grassroots
campaign would win out over
superior financing by Inhofe.
He said his primary victory
“represents the thinking of the
people of Oklahoma, that they
want that Senate seat back from
all the special interests because
that’s been the theme of my
campaign.
“And yes, my name is Boren,
and I’ve had it for a long time.
The Boren family has a long tra-
dition of service to Oklahoma.
My father, my uncles, my sister,
my brother — everybody in the
state, all of the Boren family’s
been deeply involved.”
Boren polled 55 percent, or
185,612 votes, compared with
McCorkell’s 36 percent, or
122,635, with all 2,204 precincts
reporting unofficial returns.
David Louis Annanders got
29,584 or 9 percent.
The Libertarian Party also
had a primary. Michael Clem of
Tulsa defeated Agnes Regier of
Norman by almost a 3-1 mar-
gin.
Watkins, a former Democrat
from Stillwater, easily defeated
four GOP foes in the 3rd Dis-
trict.
Roberts got 49 percent of the
vote, but will face former state
Rep. Danny Williams of Semi-
noIe in a Sept. 17 runoff J
Williams edged out businessman;
Mike Newport of Stonewall for;
second place. '
A wide open race developed;
in the 3rd District when two-;
term Rep. Bill Brewster of Ma-;
rietta decided to bow out of
public life. Brewster, after 1994,’
was the state’s only Democratic
congressman.
Johnson won over four oppo:
nents in the 2nd Congressional'
Democratic primary. :
