clinical director of the
National Institute on Aging,
reviewed 16 research projects
in the United States and
abroad and said several
studies indicate underweight
people run more risk of dying
early than do overweight
people
One study published in the
Journal of the American
Medical Association found
mortality for men between 40
and 69 decreased with in
creasing weight The study, a
long term survey of the
health of a group of residents
in Framingham, Mass., also
found mortality among
women in the same age group
was highest in the thinnest
and fattest weight groups
Andres also found obese
people can better tolerate
chemotherapy for cancer and
says their extra weight also
may help them fight off
disease which leave thin
people emaciated.
"These relationships raise
questions on the current
standards of ideal weight
used for the American
population,” the study con
eluded
Andres agreed, saying "We
have to start thinking about
what there is about obesity
that may led to better sur
