NEW YORK — (NEA) — To
the trailblazers of rock, if
necessity is the mother of in-
vention. excess is surely a
blood relative
Came the opinion, seven or
eight years ago. that a handful
of musicians playing their
hearts out was not enough to
entertain an audience That
era's more enterprising bands
had to punctuate live perfor-
mances with everything from
musical voyages past Jupiter
to simulated cannibalism
When the novelty of that
began to wear thin, bisexuali-
ty raised its heads Then came
the drag parade and the S&M

is Blue Oyster Cult.
BOC will feature a laser
light show reportedly costing
more than $100,000 and
roughly 20 times more
powerful than most commer-
cially available lasers," says
a publicity source
in addition, front man Eric
Bloom will flick around a
small prism strapped to his
wrist, "capable of projecting
a swirling cone of laser light
wherever he points his hand."
How about that, huh?
If you're still not impressed.
BOC's drummer will be plink-
ing with a laser gun at con-
tainers filled with mylar
flakes This going on from
behind see-through, plexiglass
drum risers
You might be wondering,

micks. who's playing the in-

This time last year. Steely
Dan began to sound pretty
brittle as a few charter
members abandoned their
cerebral sound for the good-
times of the Doobie Brothers
Such radical surgery was
reflected in the disemboweled
Dan's following effort, "Katy
Lied," a thorough disappoint
ment
The shame of Katy Lied
wasn't its undeveloped con-
cept or failure to include even
one track worth remember
ing The tragedy was that
after three powerful Lps that
whetted the interests of new
converts, the subsequent Katy
Lied proved more pyrite than
gold
The less-capricious ad
mirers of Steely Dan will find
their fidelity well-rewarded
with the latest album, "Royal
Scam" i ABC ABCD-931).
With only Walter Becker
and Donald Fagen of the
original nucleus still there,the
two manage to produce the
same rich imagery, cynicism
and sheer musicianship we
long ago came to expect from
the entire band
Still obviously jazz-oriented
and with Fagen's quixotic
guitar often in conflict with
his pessimistic lyrics. Royal
Scam promises some very in-
tense moments — similar to
sucking on a sour ball with
dozens of individual liquid
centers
Particularly memorable
are the title track "Royal
Scam," "Haitian Divorce"
and "Don't Take Me Alive "
The latter cut is as intriguing
as SD's previous neo-Western
sagas Coupled with their dis-
tinctive approach and
signature. SD's lyrics alter-
nate between stimulus and
complex phrases of obscure
significance Certainly not the
sort of stuff for easy listenin'
sorts But to the diehard Stee-
ly Dan fan. Royal Scam ad-
mirably belies its title
