A bill by Newman in the ''house makes bank
robbery a crime punishable-by life imprisonment
or death — ‘Wichita Eagle
The above quotation tan as a news item in our dailieB
e arly in the week Just below it and in the Bame column
appeared the following bit of news
1 DANK CLOSES DOORS
Warrent For Cashier Of Georgia Institution
Charged With $17000 Shortage '
Americus Ga Jan 5— The De Soto Banking -company
a small state institution closed its doors
today with the announcement that a shortage of
‘ $17000 had been discovered and that a warrent
had been issued charging B L Carter the cash-
ier with embezzlement
Fred B Arthur is under arrest charged with
- being an accessory but Carter has not been ar-
rested — Wichita Eagle "
On the following day the Wichita Eagle contained the
following: J "
MAY ASK PROBE
‘ Oklahoma Legislators May Investigate - -
All State Departments ' v
" Oklahoma City Okla Jan 0 — Both houses of the legis-
lature rested today Discussion among legislators een
tered on that portion of the governor's message tecom-'
-'’’mending an investigation of certain expenseitems ot the
secretary of state
Secretary Lyon has asked a probe -of the state health
- commissioner's off e If a probe committee is appointed
it is said itmigh investigate all state departments The
committee of the senate today opened hearing- of the
charges against three members of the agricultural board
which were filed by Freeman Miller of Stillwater Mil-
ler was removed from the Agricultural school faculty
' some time ago
Sure let us have capital punishment for bank robbery
Newman is an economic genius whose name should be in-
scribed along with Mills Ricardo and Rip Van Winkle
All social reforms of the past ages pale into insignificance
aB compared to this attempt to tame the elusive Oklahoma
bank robber In times past ft was the custom in this
state ’to' elect or appoint successful bank robbers nvin
killers and gun toters as -marshal sheriffs or United
States marshals Not so’ now the automobile and good
roads have changed thepersonel of the blank robber elique
and when a bank robber is captured -nowdays he is found
to be a foreign article and ' not a prominant Oklahoma
’’cowman” This infringement on the rights of the “home
guards” doesn’t go with Mr Newman Not by a long
shot when “Our Bob” is in the banking business
Since all students are open minded and fair we would
offer the following amendment to Mr Newman’s measure:
- Be it enacted by the people of the Stite of Oklahoma
that the charging of usurious and excessive interest ' by
any person in this state is a crime punishable by five years
solitary confinement iu Ringwood or Cleo that embezzle-
ment or misappropriation of public funds be punishable
by life imprisonment with a one-record talking nuchinef
that said record be oneof T R’s “bull run”' speeches that
embezzlement of the savings of widows children and poor
persons be a crime punishable by' death the criminal to be
buried in quick lime the quicker the better -At
one time in England there were 20 crimes punishable by
death among these was the killing of rabbits on some “big gink's”
estate If Newman is to take us back to that period of the World’s
Slaughter House let us go back right but let us take back with us
some of the modern methods of robbery and turn Oklanoma into a
charnel house It is a crime (and should be punished or correct-
ed) for a man to take his life in his own hands and go out to rob a
bank ‘ Is it any less a crime for some sleek weil-fed highly pol-
ished individual' to flitch hundreds of thousands of the peoples’
money and get off with it under the protection -of those whose
sworn duty it is to guard our interests)1 Is it any less a crime to
steal $100000 than it is to rob a bank of $3000? Should an embez-
zling banker get off with from five to ten years and a parole while a
bank robber serves a life sentence or is eiectricuted? Is there a
special privileged class of robbers? If it is proven upon investi-
gation at Oklahoma City that some ot our high officials are guilty
of robbery will the state hang them? ' -
Mr Newman should have waited with his proposed measure un-
til after the investigation of state officials at tin capital Pbrhaps
he could then have nfade it more inclusive If he is not four-ashing
in his capital punishment for robbers he should include- the
“in-side man’’ in his reform measure
Give us a good one Newman' One that will stop robbery on
shoddy goods incubator eggs and over salted butter Let us clean
up on this robbery business in Oklahoma Why nllow men to- en-
cumber the earth who will "load” thoir wheat "dope" their stock
and give us false weights and measures Mr Newman you may
he interested to know that there was a robbery on coal of 50c per
ton In tin) recent cold snap bof ire the coal reached the local deal-
er In the aggregate this ainu inted to thousands or dollars taken
from people who could ill afford to pay this extra toll ' Then there
are tho wheat and flour manipullors the shoddy goods robbery
the adulteration robbery tho usurous interest robbcry—Oh
pshaw your little bank robber is an inslgnificent beau in a bushel
basket— but get HIM and while yon are in the business GET THE
REST OF THE ROBBERS
