1 Perfect Tip
( The world was thousands of pears
old before matohes were known The
little tip of the match looks very
simple yet It is made of so many sub
stances put together that it took chem-
ists years to discover Just what map
terlals could be used In making It
Savages know nothing about match-
es so make their light in other ways
Sometimes the uncivilised people rub
two dry pieces of wood together until
one catches fire Often they use two
stones striking one against the othar
until a spark falls amid some dry
leaves and starts a small blase
I The Australian bushman uses 8
method of his owa to procure a light
First he selects two pieces of light
wood each about a foot long from tho
cork tree or black fig tree One a
flat piece be lays on the ground
amidst a pile of dry leaves Upon this
Istrip of wood he kneels In order to
hold down the ends Then he rolls
the other pointed stick between the
'palms of his hands so that It bores a
’ hole Into the flat strip of wood This
makes fine wood dust which catches
on lire sending Its spark among tho
dry leaves By blowing upon the tiny
ilight the bushman soon has a lire
jwhlch he feeds with more leaves
The Malay sailors follow much tho
same plan as the bushmen They use
a piece of split bamboo making a
notch across Its hollow side Sawing
Into this notch slowly then rapidly
With a sharp edged piece of bamboo
wood dust Is soon made This catches
fire and falls upon the dry leaves
I which the wise sailor has placed to
catch the sparks In the forests of
I South America the natives often
strike two stones together until a lit-
tle spark flies out Instead of using
dry leaves to receive this tiny bit of
i fire they prefer to build little heaps
lof fluffy bird feathers “Striking
light” Is a term which has come to us
from our ancestors They struck two
flint stones together until the spark
flew Into a tinder box of charred
threads of linen This tiny light was
'blown Into a flame Then a match
tipped with brimstone or sulphur was
jllghted from the little Are so that tho
candles or stove fires might be light-
ed These tinder boxes and the brim-
latone matches were always kept

! Flats Without Kitchens
1 Owing to the continuous Increase of
Ithe already exorbitant rents In tho
'poorer dlstrlots of Budapest tenants
'are organising a general resistance
against the landlords They refuse to
pay their rents and Ignore all notices
to quit In some cases the landlords
have tried to eject them collectively
but they have appealed to the courts
and not infrequently defeated the
house owners
The housing conditions of the work-
ling olasses In Budapest are said to be
iperhaps the worst of all the great
'capitals In Europe According to the
latest statistics available there are
more than 13000 flats or apartments
ithere are no cottages without kltcbr
ens and between 70 and 80 per cent
'of the wage earners live In one room
sometimes with kitchen attached but
imore often without These places are
'Inconceivably filthy doors and win-
dows cannot be flosed and there Is
frequently only one water tap for tea
jor twelve parties
I For such wretched and unsanitary
quarters the workingmen must pay
ivery often 40 per cent of his weekly
i wages The wonder Is that the revolt
against these Intolerable conditions
jdld not begin long ago Possibly the
people would have endured It still
longer had It not been for the con-
stant demands made upon them for
hlarher rents

The latest burglar-proof safe Is an
Invention called - the carrousel or
round-about safe It Is chiefly de-
signed to baffle burglars who work
with an oxygen and acetylene blow-
pipe The round-about safe Is a
polygonal steel structure which re-
volves freely on ball bearings It Is
built Into a wall and when the outer
door Is closed a small electromotor la
set In motion and the safe starts re-
volving ceaselessly and noiselessly on
Its axis within Its stone chamber
Any tampering with Its motion causes
