Washington D C July 3— Spocy'j
If looks just os probibjo at this time
thatj there will ba two gold' presidential
fcekets in the field os It does that there
kill bo two silver tickets in the Bold In
fact a little moreso It seemed for s
time that tho gold Democrats would
bow to the will of the gilvor majority In
tjic Chicago convention and after mak-
ing a protest would at least go through
he pretense of supporting the platform
ana tioket 3ut that program cow
rojrcrted to have been upset by Presi-
dent Cleveland and his supjiorters It
difficult to get authcntlo information
to the intention of the Clevelundor
gold Democrats because the man xvho
know are very guarded In their talk
But erough has leaked out to make it
believed among the politlcans tliat after
the gold Democrats fail to get any con-
cessit ns from the silver majority iq the
convcn'ion which they are almost cer-
tain to do they will bolt tbo convention
and will later nominate a g ld Demo-
cratic presidential ticket
That would suit the Populists and sil-
ver Republicans exactly provided that
the Chicago convention makes a plat-
form and nominates a ticket which all
the Silver mien will support That would
mean two gold tickets and one silver
ticket - But should the ticket nominal
ed at Chicago not be satisfactory to the
populists and republican silver men
there will be another silver ticket nom-
inated at the populist and silyer conven-
tions which arc to meet at St 1-ouis on
the 22nd of this month and then there
would be two silver tickets acd two gold
tickets with a strong probability that
the election of the president would be
thrown into the Bouse It Is an Inter-
esting situation and tho outcome will
depend largly upon tho action of the
Chicago convention in selecting a tick-
et its adoption of s silver platform is
regarded ass certainty
Senator Carter of Montana passed
through Washington this week en route
to Chicago IIo refused to talk about
his plans but his going to Chicago
where tho otLer Senators who bolted
the Republican convention are gives
plausibility to the rumor that Mr Carter
Is strongly inclined no join the Loiters
Considerable talk Las been- caused
among the politicans by the circulation
of a stcry to the effect that Hr! Garret
Hobart the Republican nominee for
vioe-president bolted tho nomination of
Blaine and was one of the principal fin-
ancial backers of the campaign made
In that year by the late Gen Benjamin
Butler who was credited with hav-
' prevented Blaire carrying New
York which in turn prevented his elec-
tion ’
While no member of the Cabinet is
going to Chicago to help Mr Whitney
try to get the best of the silver Demo-
crats quite a number of men who hold
positions under the government only
second in rank to members of tlic
Cabinet have gone or are going Of
course this lias caused many caustic re-
marks to be made concerning President
Cleveland's civil service reform pro-
fession and his past condemnation of
pernlcous political aotivlty” on the
part of government officials and the
fact has more than once been recalled
that officials have been asked to resign
r even talking fn favor of silver It
seems to be a case where what is sauce
for the goose is not sauce for the gander
In order lo highten the effect Dck
Bland should keep the committee on
notification waiting about three hours
when they arrive while he slops the
dgs The pigs may not need it but
