An Open Letter to the people of Oklahoma
from the S12 employees at Kerr-McGee
Dsar Follow Oklahoman:
r
1
DDuring the past few weeks
our Company hat been made the target of
untrue maliciout and misleading state
V menu 1 -
The 512 of us in Oklahoma who are
working for Kerr-McGee Oil Indtulfttt
Inc and our families and friends have
' listened with a deep and growing resent-
ment to one - misrepresentation after '
” another 'We have listened while loose
tongued politicians have tried to make '
political profit through insinuations about
our Company — a Company in which we
have complete faith and confidence
Frankly wl do not like itl We-do not
- like it because we know that every single
accusation that has been made against Kerr
McGee during the present Senatorial cam
paign is wholly without foundation The
people who are making this ‘‘smear attack”
- know this as well as we do That is why
they are extremely cautious not to make
-any direct statements That is why they
£ "are “beating around the bush" with sly
' suggestions in a vicious attempt to under
mine the good reputation and integrity of a
company whose name is highly respected
in Oklahoma -
We frt convinced that 'the only way to
answer thif loose vicious talk is with the f
unchallenged truth We are proud of our
Company We are proud of the men who
lead it We know them to be capable
conscientious snd completely: hodest We
bitterly resent tbe slanderous attacks which
have been made on them and on Kerr -Me
Gee These are attacks pn our integrity our
business methods
Those who would like to destroy the
fine reputation we have worked so hard
to build through the years have tried to
blind the people of Oklahoma with a pack
of lies We will open your eyes with the
trutbl The people of Oklahoma have a '
keen sense of fair play Our friends and
neighbors in this great state will quickly '
' distinguish between FALSEHOOD and
TRUTH!
FALSEHOOD: - Great efforts have been
made to mislead the people of Oklahoma
- into believing that Kerr-McGee owns ex-
tensive foreign oil production and has im-
ported it to the detriment of the people of
-Oklahoma s
-THE TRUTH: This is a' shameless lie
This Company does not how own nor
has ir ever owned any foreign production
WO hsve nevet purchased Or Imparted one
barrel of foreign crude oil It is true that
because': of ’ our " experiences "personnel'"
equipment know-how and ability to'
undertake tough and difficult jobs Arrr-
McGtt has conducted drilling operations
around the world But and wo defy any '
one to deny tMa-jour Company has served -
primarily as an independent (frilling con
tractor working fot other oil companies
Tbe oil industry of Oklahoma has pio
send around the world We are proud to
have pioneered with it s
FALSEHOOD Many derogatory and'
deceptive remarks have Hen made about
we Kerr-McGee refinery at Wynnewoodf
Oklahoma Those who art attfmpting to
l influence votes through g vicious and ua
warranted attack on ibis Company would
have you believe that our Wynaswodd
refinery is the outgrowth of political graft '
and patronage during the time Bob Kerr
served as Governor of Oklahoma -
JHJ TRUTH: This1 is an outright and ‘
slsgrant misrepresentation Records at the
State Highway Department prove that not
one dollar's woftb of asphalt road material
was sold to the State of Oklahoma by
Krr-McGtf or any of its subsidiaries while
Bob Kerr was governor This is the official :
public record available to any citizen and
those who claim otherwise know they do -so
falsely -
Those who seek to deceive you arc
afraid to tell you about the great con-
tribution the Kerr-McGee refinery is mak-
ing to the oil industry and prosperity of
our State Since the refinery was pur-
chased its capacity has been steadily in-
creased During the last sixty (60) days
- we have further increased its capacity from
9000 to 1 5000 barrels of crude oil per '
-day It runs entirely on Southern Okla-
homa crude mostly -low gravity oil and
we are still paying more for this low grav-
ity oil than is being paid by others for the
same grade oil in surrounding states
At the present time we are constructing
s 6500 barrel per day fluid-type catalytic
' cracking unit at Wynnewood-when com-
pleted it will make this Oklahoma plant
one of the world’s most modem refineries
This increased use of Oklahoma oil is being
made at a time when most purchasers arc
drastically reducing their takes of Okla-
homa oil '
FALSEHOOD: Many caustic and bc-'“
littling jabs arc being made at “Kerr black
top" in a desperate effort to create the im-
pression that asphaltic road material is an
inferior product of which we should al be
ashamed j
THE TRUTH: It is odd that those who
pretend to be so concerned with the wel-
fare of Oklahoma would take such a dis-
paraging - attitude toward an Oklahoma
' road building material that is being increas-
ingly used with complete success through-
out the United States We at Kerr-McGee
make no apologies for "Oklahoma black -top"
We art proud to be working for one
of the ten companies in' Oklahoma who
manufacture this Oklahoma product from
Oklahoma crude oil We are proud that '
such super highways as the Maine Turn
pike New Jersey Turnpike and San Ber-
nadine Expressway used asphaltic concrete
after the most competitive tests and meet-
ing the most rigid highway engineering
specifications "Oklahoma Black Top” was
used to pave every mile 'of thr “Turner
Turnpike" On this Turnpike as on all'
job on Oklahoma highways any seller "
must meet specifications ana can sell only
in free competitive bidding '
FALSEHOOD: A calculated effort is
being made to leave the impression that k-Kerr-McGee's
uranium holdings are the
result of political influence and “inside in-
formation" from Washington
FALSEHOOD: Through inuendo and -implication
a deliberate attempt hat been
made to turn Ktrr-McGtt uranium hold-'
ings into a "family skeletdn" that can be
conveniently dragged from the closet for
political profit
THE TRUTH: We have no desire or rea-
‘ son to hide any fact about our uranium
' operations from any loyal American citi-
zen In fact we are proud of the important
contributions we are making to our
nation's security in this most important
field Through our research laboratory
right here in Oklahoma we have developed
new methods of mining and milling that
are and will be of inestimable value to our
country in future years We the employees
of Kerr-McGtt take pride too in the fact
that our Company's uranium operations
are being conducted without the use of one
penny of federal funds -
FALSEHOOD: Frequent and uncompli-
mentary reference has been made to Kerr
McGtt 1 ?' foreign operation in Alaska'
and that our interests there iad been ac
quired through political influence -
THS TRUTH: First pf all Alaska is not
a “foreign country"' ) And second the
leases we are now exploring in Alaska were
not acquired through any political action
or connection They were originally filed
on many years ago under the Federal Leas-
ving Act by two privately owned American
companies in’ the Pacific Northwest with
whom - Kerr-McGee has no connection
whatever We bought and paid for our
interest after it had been repeatedly offered
to other oil companies on the same basis
for a number of years So far we are still
pioneering and searching for Pil in one of
America’s most -rugged frontiers and have
notiyet found a barrel of oil
FALSEHOOD: : Through half-truths
and vague references there have been evil
efforts to throw a dark shadow over Ktrr-
McGtt't offshore leases and operations—
to suggest that they had been acquired by
devious methods
THE TRUTH: All of Kerr-McGee’s off-
shore leases in the Gulf of Mexico were
" purchased by free waled competitive bid-
ding from the states of Louisiana and
Texas Ail of these leases in the Tidelands
‘ Area claimed by the Federal Government
’ were purchased before Bob Kerr became
Senator All were purchased before the
Federal Government made any claim of
’ ownership We employees art proud that
our lnlancf'Oil company right here in Okla-'
homa is recognized as one of the pioneers
7 THE TRUTH: That is another prepos-
verousheKKerrMcGedoesownuranium--Tndread-rnTidela’nddrllTingsnddevei
mines but they were acquired from inde- 1 opment
- pendent prospectors who in turn had pur- tsirrunnn '
chased them and had just begun to develop ' FALSEHOOD: - There have been ugly
them In May 1952 our Company pur-: ' refetenceS msde to the discovery well re-
chased these mines equipment and other’ cn y dnlled in Cuba by Ktrr-McGtt
property Sinoeunpurtnawt we have ex- iff made that this will result
panded these mining operations and are
now Constructing a uranium processing
plant at Shiprock New Mexico
FALSEHOOD: It has been implied that -
Sue to Senatorial infldknce there ia some-
Uni evil about the fact that Ktrr-McGtf
is selling the government all of the uranium
we produce
THE TRUTH: This ia one of the moat
ridiculous of the false statements being cir-
culated Certainly we sell our uranium to
the government because of National De-
fense requirements and our nation’s secur-
ity All uranium mined and milled Jn tbe
United States ia processed under the strict
supervision of the Atomic Energy Com-
mission snd all uranium must bo sold to Ibo
Albmle Inorwy Commission at uniform prices
established by the Commission There ia
bo possibility of any preferential treatment
to any one under the regulations of the
Atomic Energy Commission
in our importing foreign crude oil into this
country
THE TRUTH: Kerr-McGee did drill this
discovery well We do have an option to
acquire yi interest in this new field but
that option has not yet been exercised Any -informed
oil man knows that Cuba pro-
duces less than 1000 barrels of oil per day
It is forced to import mostly from South
America all of ita vast requiiiiments foe oil
and its products Cuba desperately needs
to find oil for its own uses and would not
permit any Cuban oil to be exported

REFUSES TO BE DISABLED — Brown Page 42-year-old farmer
in the Hamden community north of Hugo refuses to become disabled
although his legs have been paralysed since 1947 He operates a 548-
acre farm with the help of hand controls on his tractor and car all
designed by Page and -a system of rope swings which assist him on
and off the vehicles (Paris News Staff Photo) t i
‘i The above picture and “cutlines” ap
’ peared as a part of a feature story in a
recent issue of The Paris News written
by one of their staff writers who lives in
Paris”
Below is the major portion of the story
published and paid for as a political ad-
vertisement unknown to Brown by s
group of his friends who have pot forgot-
ten that Brown lost the use of his legs
while protecting their Jives' and property
in his work as a Choctaw county deputy
sheriff v v-r V
We sincerely ask that you read this
story about what BROWN PAGE candi-
date for county commissioner Hugo dis-
trict can do and has done despite loss of
the use of his legs
YOUR VOTE FOR
FOR COMMISSION-
We then ask
BROWN PAGE
ER ON JULY 6
Since 1949 Page has completely
conquered his handicap with the
burning determination he’ll not be
disabled
There are few thinga he cannot
do
“I can do anything anybody else
can do' except run foot race”
rage asserts confidently
Drive e tractor Drive e car
Mow hia lawns hie pastures
“Been to Roebuck Lake out on
those ramps fishing
“Go down to the pasture and
shoot quite a few squirrels”
The 42-year-old Hamden com-
munity farmer actively operates
his 548 acre farm eight miles north
of Hugo He cultivates 35acres iu
crops and grates atocker cattle on
r -To
escape an invalid’s role Page
has designed a simple set of ropes
from tree limbs' that allow him to
swing on and off the tractor in
and out of his car to a battery
powered wheel chair There are
hand controls also Page’s idea on
the tractor and automobile
When traveling in his car a rod
on tho top gives a hand hold to
awing to a portable chair
“Haa to bo pretty bad when I
don’t go somewhere every day”
It waa a much darker outlook in
1947 when an escaped convict’s
bullets caught Page Ho was a
deputy sheriff attempting to ques-
tion tho man when officers ran into
an ambush
Reposted o seminations snd
treatment followed Pago apent
nearly a year in and out of hos-
pitals at Hugo Paria Oklahoma
City and Rochester Minn Doctors
generally agreed further treatment
wouldn’t help
Whether Page ever regained
the use of his legs depended
entirely upon the stocky Huge-
an They did advise him te work out-
doora and get his mind off hia
troubles
“Everyone of them told me it
depended on me whether I get
welL '
“I’ve never thought about giv-
ing up” he says with a cheerful
smile “Keep trying te get wen”1
Page returned to his farm on
the rolling sandy land The neat
white house that sparkles beneath
sprawling shade from old oaks
provided a peaceful background
for Page to make a start
Soon there was a rope looped
from a - tree - Page could swing-
from Ills tractor to his chair There
was another set of ropes at the
side of the porch jBIe couId swing”
onto the tractor' - - - -
Hand controls gave him full
command of the tractor" He does'
his own plowing planting filling
of ditches post hole digging and
fence repairing all from the trac-
tor '
“Had to get out of the house”-
he explains
He also mows pastures with tho -tractor
and guides a power moc-
er about the large lawn from hie
Electroglide chair
He’s set his sights on another
job - that will -demand hia year-
round attention and keep him out-
doors most of the lime Psge has
announced hia candidacy for com-
missioner of District 2 in Choctaw
county
He quickly followed his applica-
tion Jot the office with a public
announcement that he waan’t dis-
abled and didn’t want “sympathy
votes Page figurss his experience
in construction work qualifies him
for tho commissioner post
“I can atill handle a build oxer”-
A VOTE FOR BROWN PAGE FOR COUN-
TY COMMISSIONER (District 2) IS A
VOTE FOR AN ABLE-BODIED THOUGH
CRIPPLED MAN WHO NEITHER ASKS
NOR WANTS ANYTHING FROM LIFE
EXCEPT A CHANCE
