DEAR MRS. T: This is one case in which daughter
knows best. Dr. Jeffrey Weiss, of the Jefferson Medi-
cal College and director of the Children's Health
Center of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in
Philadelphia, says that well-made, well-fitting
sneakers are appropriate for children. Leather
shoes with arch supports are not essential for young
children unless they have a special foot problem.
DEAR DR. SOLOMON: Fm taking medicine for ar-
thritis and it’s doing part of the job but not the whole
job. There are so many little things I used to do
around the house without even thinking about them,
and now each one is a problem. Would taking more
medicine help me get around without having to de-
pend on other people so much? — Herbert, Madison,
Wise.
DEAB HERBERT: First I would warn you against
trying to treat yourself. If you feel that your present
medication or the dosage is inadequate, discuss it
with your physician. As I've said a number of times,
a drug powerful enough to produce a beneficial
change in the body is powerful enough to do harm if
used inappropriately.
However, there may be some things you can do
around the house that would make it easier for you.
Dr. Andrew R. Klipper, chief of rheumatology at St.
Joseph Hospital in Baltimore, suggests using forks
and spoons with oversized handles so that they can
be grasped more easily. A suction cup attached to a
plate to prevent it from slipping may also be helpful,
and a cutting board with spikes can be used for hold-
ing food in place.
Some arthritic patients find it difficult to open
cabinet doors. If this is a problem for you, try sliding
a length of rope through the door handle. It will help
you open the cabinet without having to grasp the
handle itself. Faucets, chairs, and other household
items can also be modified to make life a little easi-
er for the patient with arthritis.
