PHNOM PENH, Cambo-
dia (fl—The Cambodian gov-
ernment denied Thursday
that it had expressed satis-
faction at the death of Pres-
ident Kennedy.
Replying to a U. S. pro-
test, the government press
service said that on the con-
• trary Cambodia observed
three days of national
morning for the assassinat-
ed president, and Premier
Prince Norodom Kantol had
been sent to Washington to
represent ruling Prince Nor-
odom Sihanouk at Kennedy’s
funeral.
Homage Paid
“ ‘It is therefore absurd to
pretended that Cambodian
nation did not pay meritori-
ous homage to the memory
of the noble president of the
United States,” the state-
ment said. "President Ken-
nedy had the unanimous re-
spect of all Cambodians.4’
But the statement added a
swipe at the United States,
saying:
"Cambodia has no lesson
in propriety coming from
so-called evolved countries
where racism breaks out pe-
riodically into violent dem-
onstrations such as our so-
ciety has never known and
will never know.”
U. S. Protests
The United States protest-
ed to the Cambodian govern-
ment after U. S. monitors
reported hearing a broad-
cast by the official Cambo-
dian radio rejoicing at the
death of South Viet Nam
President Ngo Dinh Diem
and Thai Premier Sarit
Thanarat along with "the
great boss of these aggres-
sors."
The term "great boss"
was taken in Washington to
be a reference to President
Kennedy.
As for Diem and Sarit,
the press service said joy
and satisfaction were ex-
pressed not for their deaths
but for "the liberation from
the menaces and humilia-
tions which they symbolized
during their lives and from
which peaceful Cambodia
senate leaders and expects
to work closely with them
on his new proposals.
The Minnesota senator
joined Democratic leader
Mike Mansfield of Montana
in blasting rumors that 86-
year-old Sen. Carl Hayden
(D-Ariz.) ’would resign as
president pro tempore, with
Mansfield taking his place
and Humphrey stepping up
to Democratic leader.
Harmony Claimed
"There will be no
changes whatsoever,” Hum-
phrey said. “Senate Demo-
crats want Mike Mansfield
as their leader. I want him
and I see no change in the
future.”
Humphrey said he was
certain that Johnson expects
to continue the harmonious
contacts with Democratic
congressional leaders "en-
joyed by the late President
John Fitzgerald Kennedy.”
The sudden elevation of
Johnson to the presidency
left the office of vice presi-
dent vacant and made House
Speaker John W. McCor-
mack (D-Mass.), 72 next
week, next in line for the
presidency with Hayden, the
oldest member of congress,
behind McCormack in suc-
cession.
McCormack Angry
Public and press discus-
sion of the 1947 act which
places these two veterans in
line for the White House ap-
parently touched off rumors
of a possible shuffle in sen-
ate leadership.
Mansfield quickly denied
that Hayden planned to re-
sign and said the rumors are
"absolutely without any re-
sponsible foundation.”
"They seek to bring about
a discord and disunity with-
in the Democratic Party and
its leadership in the sen-
ate.” Mansfield added
tartly.
McCormack was even
more irate when a reporter
asked if he was considering
resigning in favor of a
younger man who would be
in line for the presidency,
and I’m going to remain,"
“I was elected speaker
McCormack bristled as he
strode from the session with
newsmen.
