Food Value of Soda Water
Within the past few years
soft drinks nave become one of
the leading and wholesome
foods of America according to
Dr Lewis li Allyn Director ot
the W e s t fi e 1 d Laboratories
Westfield Mass Dr Allyn
who is one of the leading food
chemists of the United States
speaking before a Boston audi
ence asserted that soft bevera-
ges through their nutritive
value and sanitation have ceased
to be only thirst quenchers and
have come to be recognized
a healthful food product
“An eight ounce glass of soft
drink carries about 87 calories
of heat or energy-forming ma-
terial” Dr Allyn stated
“Eighty-seven calories is equal
to tne average amount of heat
or energy building units con-
tained in the average portion
of siced bananas Eighty-seveu
calories is no small amount and
there are plenty of foods in
every day use which are recog-
nized as healthful and substan-
tial that do not have the food
value of glass or carbonated
beveages
“For example flounders and
several other varieties of fish
shell clams lobsters asparagus
stiing beans and various other
green vegetables sauer kraut
tomatoes beef soup chicken
broth and so on indefinitely
And yet how few people realize
that a pound " of carbonated
beverage has as much food value
as a pound of these recognized
foods
“Soft drinks have other uses
They carry no inconsiderable
amount of organic or fruit acids
which are utilized by the body
in maintaining what is 'known
as the acid-alkali balance These
drinks perform an important
function as flavor through its
condimental effects acts as a
gentle appetizer and tends to
promote a more thorough and
easy digestion of the food”
We carry a complete line of
these refreshing beverages—
