another Illustration of the rtghteoue
neea ot hla new kingdom which must
bo greater than that taught by the
Pharisees " We have studied the sa-
cred relations of the righteous lire
now wo sre to consider the matter of
truth We have first a paragraph from
Jesua than an othlcal teaching and ap-
plication from the writings ot James
the apostle
Under the old law mea swors by
heaven which la God’s throne by tbo
earth which la hla footstool by Jeru-
salem which was hla peculiar chosen
city They swore by the bead and
yet they could not change one hair
white or black Jesus contrasts all
of this with hla new kingdom In
which absoluto simple veracity In our
speech la all that la to be required
This makes all oaths profane When
men live In these new relations with
this new consciousness of God they
will speak the truth naturally and ot
necessity To such there will be no
need for any form of apeech or oath
for the simplest plainest speech will
ho tbo only necessary and the alt
gether satisfactory medium of giving
and of creating assurance How about
oaths in court? Jesus la speaking to
the members of hla new kingdom Be-
tween them yea and nay la sufficient
hut as between them and others we
must adjust ourselves and therefore
wo do not read Into this any admoni-
tion not to take an oath in court
Should Be Ewlft to Hear
Be not many teachers” We now
tarn to paragraph from the Kplstle
ot James which haa Us peculiar value
and Interest as showing the difficulty
of mastering the tongue In the
church of Christ there must of neces-
sity bo a great many more disciples
(learners) than teachers Every man
should be swift to hear but the posi-
tion of tsacher carries with It auch
a burden ot responsibility that no on
should audaciously asssume It see
Eph 4:11 eta With thle responsibil-
ity Is also a correspondingly heavier
Judgment if we stumble He that
stumbles not In teaching In the use
of his tongue Is Indeed a perfect man
and one that la able to bridle the
whole body to guide the ship of life
of state and ot the church amidst
the fiercest storms
"The tongue Is a fire” It la In-
deed tor It Inflames with anger the
whole body the family society and
the nation History la ablaze with the
conflagrations that are a consequence
of untimely words and o( unbridled
tongues Prov 15:1 etc Tbe tongue
giving utterance to tbe thoughts of tbe
heart (for out of the abundance ot tbe
heart It speaks) will Inflame lust
wither purity and consume strength
It fires Jealousy and burns the sweet
bonds of friendship It will sever tbe
tlea of home burn away the founder
tlona ot character ot commercial in-
tegrity nodal purity and destroy ths
bonds of civic righteousness It la
Indeed "a world ot Iniquity among our
members” Let us quote from Dr K
A Torrey: ‘The fires of hell are
kindled by Idle words that set men
thinking wrong about God and sin and
Christ and the Bible Men usually
careful in handling fire are careless
about the tongue Whence come tbe
word! that Inflame ths Imagination
and the paaalona? Whence come the
words that undermine faith and tha
credibility of the Bible? if any man
question James’ words that tbe tongue
can do man tame’ he haa evidently
never tried it himself” This does not
mean however that the tongue can
not be tamed for what la Impossible
with man la possible with God James
draws a frightful picture of tbe un-
tamed tongue and of Its evil conse-
quences - Profane Men Classified
"These things ought not to be”
No more can a fountain yield fresh
and salt water at one and tbe same
time or a fig tree yield olives than
for a Christian to bless God and with
the asms tongue curse his fellow men
Not only Is It unkind but It Is un-
Chrlstllke Sarcasm means literally
"to tear flesh like dogs" the chari-
oteer's whip tore tbe flesb so we use
the tongue ae a lash biting tbe sensi-
tive spirits of men verily these things
"ought not to be” Phillips Brooks
said “Tell me the words a man uses
and reproduce hla tone of voice and
I’ll tell what aort of man he Is”
It is s literal fact that the truthful
man la he who usually exemplifies all
other virtues and we cannot em-
phasize too strongly that no gentle-
man swears Profane men are of
three classes those who are thought-
less those wfao are ignorant of lan-
guage and have a paucity of expres-
sions at their command and those
who use profanity to emphasise a He
and generally the greater the He the
more and stronger tbe oaths We must
not forget however that by our al-
ienee we may bear false witness and
that a positive obligation rests upon

PHYSICIAN ADVISES
CUTICURA REMEDIES
"Four years ago I had places break
out on my wrist and on my shin which
would Itch and burn by spells and
scratching them would not seem to
glvo any relief When the trouble first
began my wrist and shin itched like
poison I would scratch thoae places
until they would bleed before 1 could
get any relief Afterwards the placet
would actio over and the flesh un-
derneath would look red and feverish
Sometimes it would begin to Itch until
It would waken me from my sleep
and I would have to go through the
scratching ordeal again '
Our physician pronounced It "dry
eczema ” I used an ointment which
the doctor gave me but It did no good
Thdn be advised me to try the Cutl-
cura Remedies As tbla trouble haa
been In our family for years and la
considered hereditary I felt anxious
to try to head it off I got the Cut!-
cura Soap Ointment and Pllla and
they seemed to be Just what I needed
"The disease was making great
headway on my system until I got
the Cutlcura Remedies which have
cleared my skin of the great pest
From the time the eczema healed four
yeara ago until now I have never felt
any of lta peat and I am thankful to
the Cutlcura Soap and Ointment which
certainly cured me I always use tbe
Cutlcura Soap for toilet and I hope
other sufferers from skin diseases will
use the Cutlcura Soap and Ointment"

been a stranger until that evening
“you look rather young to have a
daughter ready for college”
“O!" said the mother naively "she
isn’t old enough now she Is just eight
months old but 1 do so like to look

“ONE MILLION LEAGUE
FOR MANITOBA”
The putposee of ths "Million for
Manitoba League” ars set out in ths
fact that Manitoba wants mors peo-
ple Today ths population is leaa than
five hundred thousand and tho de-
termination of tho representative mea
ot ths Province to devote their best
energies to Increasing this to a mil-
lion la a worthy on There Is already
widespread Interest la evary munlo-
Ipallty committees ars appointed
whose duties ars to secure - such s
thorough knowledge ot local ooadt-
tions that whether ths appllcsst for
Information he s laborer for the farm
a would-be tenant a probable home-
steader the buyer of a small improved
farm or the purchaser of a large tract
for colonising farmers the informa-
tion la at hand froe
The advantages that Manitoba poo
ceases sre many and with the ex-
ploitation that will he given them by
the' birth of this new acquisition to
the settlement and Immigration prop-
aganda that la being carried on by
the Dominion Government there Ic no
doubt that the establishment of the
bureau will very soon bring about the
results looked for Manitoba Ip prac-
tically the gateway of the great grain
bplt of the West Its farm lands
have demonstrated time and again
that they have a yielding value that
practically makes them worth over
one hundred dollars per acre Added
to the yielding value of the land there
la an Increased value on account of
lta nearness to markets and the mat-
ter of freight ratea la carefully con-
sidered by the cautious buyer But
the Information more valuable to the
Incoming settler la that It still haa an
Immense amount of vacant fertile land
open for homesteads This dispels the
Idea that free homesteads In Manitoba
are about exhausted In addition to
tbla tbe territory recently added to
the Province will open up a home-
steading area which when filled
should fully satisfy the "Million for
Manitoba League” Within the old
boundaries there la an area of 47360-
000 acres test than six million acres
of the 16 million acrea occupied be-
ing under cultivation At present there
are over 20 million acrea of available
land capable of being put under the
plough If In every one of the 195000
vacant quarter sections of tbe Prov-
ince an average family of four persona
were placed there would be added a
rural population of nearly 800000 So
there la room for additional hundreds
of thousands on the farma of Mani-
toba without any possibility of con-
gestion The population per mile In
Iowa la 894 In Minnesota It la 235
That In Manitoba la only 7L
A glance at the map copies of which
will be forwarded upon application to
any Canadian Government Agent
shows that Manitoba la wonderfully
well supplied with railways There
are but few farina that are more than
ten or twelve miles from a railway
line: elevators are convenient and
markets are always good Tbe grow-
ing of grain while a big feature In
tbe inducements held out la well re-
enforced by tbe great possibilities that
exist In all portions of the Province
for the raising of stock for dairying
for bogs and for a successful class of
mixed farming and what gives addi-
tional Interest is the fact that there
la so much land In the Province open
for free homesteading that Improved
farms in almost all of the 98 munici-
palities can be purchased at very low
figures Many of the owners of these
have made sufficient upon which to re-
tire and are becoming residents of the
cities In addition to the export mar-
ket for the produce of tbe farm Man-
itoba has a number of large cities and
towns providing a splendid local mar-
ket Truck and garden farming are
highly profitable branches Winnipeg
