OU Journalism Students Win Awards Madeline Wilson
And Internships on Journalism Day Joins Times Staff
Outstanding journalism students at the University of Oklahoma Norman
were recognized with scholarships awards and honors on Journalism day
April 16 John C Campbell Vinita and Miss Patricia A Walker Chickasha
were chosen Mr and Miss Journalism by vote of students He is editor of the
Oklahoma Daily student newspaper and she is news editor
Miss Carol Jean Robinson Blackwell
and Dennis Berend Norman received
certificates as outstanding news waiters
by Sigma Delta Chi men’s fraternity
and Theta Sigma Phi women’s organi-
zation respectively
The Oklahoma Daily editors’ awards
given by present and immediate past ed-
itors were presented to Miss Carolyn
Gimpel and Miss Patricia Evans both
of Oklahoma City The $250 community
journalism scholarship was awarded to
Frederick Wettengel Hinton The
award is given by an anonymous donor
to a student who plans to own and
operate a small-town newspaper after
graduation
Miss Patricia A Olive Poteau won
the $200 Gerald V Underwood memo-
rial scholarship Miss Robinson received
the $300 William T Eaton memorial
scholarship
The first annual Jim Thornton memo-
rial scholarship went to Miss Evans
The award is given in memory of
Thornton former OU journalism stu-
dent who was killed in a plane crash
January 25 He was president of the
OU Student Press association last year
Miss Joy M Starry Blanchard re-
ceived the $50 Shirley Stone memorial
scholarship Mrs Joan Emerson Nor-
man won the Geneva Belle Ray Me-
morial $50 scholarship
Winners of summer internships on
newspapers were announced David C
Frost Hobart will work as reporter on
the Oklahoma City Times Bill M Wise
Tecumseh will be a reporter on the
Tulsa Tribune and Bruce Anthony
Norman will serve in the advertising
department of the Oklahoma Publishing
Co Oklahoma City
Thirteen students received McMahon
foundation scholarships Under these
grants each class is apportioned $1000

membership in Kappa Tau Alpha jour-
nalism honor society were announced
They were Miss Veta M Gardner
Houston Tex Mrs Mary Carol Han-
sen Norman and Miss Jo Ann Hodg-
son Enid They were initiated in a pub-
lic ceremony at the Journalism day
luncheon
Prosecution Summons
Witnesses in Trial
Of Bulloch Others
U S Attorney B Hayden Crawford
called 50 witnesses for the prosecution
in the first week of the trial of 20 defend-
ants including Nolen Bulloch Tulsa
Tribune reporter charged with conspi-
racy to violate federal liquor laws The
trial which began April 16 continued
this week in federal court in Tulsa
Keith K King Associated Press writ-
er said Crawford expected to call 85
witnesses for prosecution after which
defense witnesses would be summoned
King said a capacity crowd was watch-
ing the trial in the courtroom
The prosecution tried to prove the de-
fendants including Tulsa police officials
were to share in money collected from
whisky dealers and others in return for
protection against police interference
and newspaper publicity
The Tulsa Tribune has publicly ex-
pressed confidence in Bulloch and pro-
vided his bond and defense counsel

er and Mrs Wiley became sole owners
of the Sun and its commercial printing
shop through purchase of Aubrey L
McAlister’s stock Wiley joined the Sun
staff in 1953 after being circulation man-
ager of the Oskaloosa (la) Daily Her-
ald seven years He had worked on Ok-
lahoma City Stillwater and Muskogee
papers
Whih on the Daily Oklahoman and
Oklahoma City Times in 1945 Wiley
was elected a director of the Midwest
Circulation Managers’ association
McAlister was publisher of the Sun
from September 1952 to June 1953 and
remained a stockholder after the organi-
zation of the Grove Printing and Pub-
lishing Co in July 1953 when Wiley be-
came publisher McAlister is now pub-
lisher of the Bonhani (Tex) Daily Favorite

Tonkawa News Will Run
Series on Pioneer Days
The Tonkawa News published by
Francis Langdon will run a series of
articles about pioneer days in conjunc-
tion with the semicentennial celebration
Old photographs will be used The se-
ries is scheduled to begin in June
Don Prather news editor said the se-
ries plan has been selected in preference
to a single semicentennial edition in or-
der to stimulate interest throughout the
year Unpublished pictures and stories
about community life farm operations
and community life in the area are being
sought
