enter the vocation of printing and of
making it financially possible for them
to take the necessary training is now a
responsibility of members of the Okla-
homa Press association"
He said three programs have been
laid out by the committee:
1 Advertising and promotion of
printing school at Okmulgee Tech Ad
mats are to be mailed to newspapers by
central office
Loan Fund Needs Cash
2 The committee is now ready to re-
ceive cash investments in the Oklahoma
Press association printing school loan
fund and they can be classified as a tax
deductible business expense He added
that the loan trustees have patterned
the mechanics of the program after the
Lew Wentz foundation
3 Mechanical short courses covering
five areas: machine maintenance (either
two separate 5-day courses or courses
divided into three 2-day weekend
courses) makeready on job presses
(3-day) flatbed press operation (3-
day) bindery (3-day) and stripcasting
and stereotyping (3-day)
Short Courses to Be Set
Kidd said the central office is mailing
out information about the courses giv-
ing class dates and tuition He said ap-
plications will be handled on first come
first served basis and hence urged that
reservations be made as quickly as pos-
sible He concluded by asking that the as-
sociation establish a printing school
committee on a continuing basis

News suggested that an investigation
be made to see whether Wentz funds at
Oklahoma A&M college could be used
by students at Okmulgee
WNR Official Speaks
Paul C Smith editor of the Rock
Rapids (Iowa) Reporter and vice pres-
ident of Weekly Newspaper Representa-
tives Inc reviewed briefly the history
of national representation in the weekly
field
He said that late in 1951 the American
Press association and Newspaper Ad-
vertising Service of National Editorial
association had equal representation in
forming Weekly Newspaper Represen-
tatives Inc A year later Smith said
the firm was $120000 in the hole but
in January 1953 National Editorial as-
sociation and some publishers put up
$60000 and took over the interest of the
American Press association The com-
pany is now having a profitable opera-
tion he said
Plymouth Account Helped
Selling of the Plymouth account in
November 1953 by Weekly Newspaper
Representatives Inc was stressed by
Smith He said new office equipment
representing an outlay of $15000 was
needed in order to handle the business
Smith emphasized the problem to
WNR of publishers asking for direct
placement of orders by agencies He
said “a national representative would
not cost but pay"
He urged affiliation with the National
Editorial association and Weekly News-
paper Representatives Inc

ogy report showing deaths of 85 news
papermen former newspapermen and
relatives the past year For the first time
in OPA history the necrology report
was printed Booklets of the report were
distributed to those present
Newsprint Expansion Seen

company sales and service agency for
Southland Paper Mills discussed the
topic “Newsprint Supply — Newsprint
Prices" In speaking a specifically of
Southland Schenck said virtually 100
percent of the output is distributed to
contract publishers of Texas Oklahoma
Louisiana and Arkansas the only excep-
tion being the Republic of Mexico
When asked about plans for expan-
sion at Lufkin Tex he said that by
July 1 it is hoped there will be pledges
of tonnage to justify the board of direc-
tors to authorize the installation of a
third manufacturing unit at a minimum
cost of $18 million
Plaque Given Phillips
Gerald T Curtin presented a plaque
expressing appreciation to Phillips for
his work as president This was in ac-
cordance with the association’s annual
custom

Gcis’ Mother Dies
Mrs Frank Geis 86 mother of How-
ard T Geis of the Crossman Co print-
ing establishment in Stillwater died at
Okeene her home May 17 She had
made the run into the Cherokee Strip
in 1893 Geis a former Okeene Norman
and Stroud newspaperman has man-
aged the Crossman printing department
since 1948
