Is Announced
Three newspapers at Anadarko will
be consolidated under one management
April 1 and newspapers at Blair Duke
and Altus will be combined and pub-
lished at Altus it was announced this
week
James C Nance floor leader of the
house of representatives and publisher
of the Purcell register announced
March 15 that negotiations had been
completed for consolidation of the Ana-
darko Weekly Tribune the Dajly
American-Democrat and the Daily
News
McBride to Be in Charge
John L Coffey member of the high-
way commission and Joe W Mc-
Bride publisher of the Walters Herald
are associates of Nance in the new en-
terprise McBride will be in charge
Definite details of the new publica-
tion arrangement were not announced
but plans call for the publication of a
daily newspaper and a weekly news-
paper at Anadarko

Equipment to Be Moved
J Warren White who established the
Jackson County Chronicle in 1926 an-
nounced March 12 that he had sold his
plant with the exception of job print-
ing equipment to W O Watt pub-
lisher of the Blair News and William
E Allen publisher of the Jackson
County Tribune Duke
The equipment of the newspaper
plants at Duke and Blair will be moved
to Altus and the subscription lists of
the three newspapers will be com-
bined White however will continue to
operate the job department until April
1 Later he may open a commercial
printing shop in Altus He is the owner
of a printing shop at Olustee where he
formerly published the Olustee News
He was the owner of the Hollis Post-
Herald from 1920 to 1926 when he sold
the newspaper to J W Roberts
Watt established the Blair News in
1928 He formerly was publisher of the
Tipton Tribune Allen came to Okla-
homa from Texas in 1906 He pur-
chased the Jackson County Tribune in
1926 He w'as elected to the state house
of representatives in 1930
Oklahoma Hews Adds Reporters
Wayne Young Dayton Ohio and
George Smith Minneapolis Minn
have joined the staff of the Oklahoma
News Young has been assigned to
coverage of the chamber of commerce
and civic clubs and Smith is working
on general assignments
House Kills Libel Act
By Vote of 55 to 38
Governor Favors Bill
The Kight libel bill which would
radically change the libel laws of the
state was killed by the house of rep-
resentatives by a vote of 55 to 38 on
March 17
The first vote was 49 to 44 five mem-
bers changing for the record after it
became apparent the bill was defeated
H Tom Kight Rogers county spon-
sor of the measure also changed his
vote to give notice of reconsideration
The bill which is being strenuously
opposed by the Oklahoma Press asso-
ciation as an attack on the freedom of
the press would put the burden of
proof on publishers involved in libel
actions
Governor Marland's aid has been en-
listed to try to revive the law the
Daily Oklahoman reported March 18
1 The newspaper quoted the governor
as saying “As I understand the theory
of it I am in favor of it I am going
to study it with the idea of favoring
any legislation to make newspapers
print news and not supposition”
Tuttle Times Is Sold
To Austin Vandament
Austin Vandament son of P B Van-
dament publisher of the Yukon Sun
and president of the Oklahoma Press
association has purchased the Tuttle
Times from Henry M Butler
He will become editor and publisher
within the next two weeks Butler
who established the Pryor Creek Clip-
per in Indian Territory in 1889 has
owned the Tuttle Times since July
1936 He leased the newspaper to John
Barker January 1 1937 but recently
resumed control
Vandament will be assisted in the
publication of the paper by Mrs Min-
nie Blassingame who will act as news
editor
TED MAGEE NAMED EDITOR
OF HOLLYWOOD MAGAZINE
Ted Magee former state newspaper-
man and son of Carl Magee former
editor of the Oklahoma News recently
was named editor of Screen Book motion-picture
magazine published in Los
Angeles He is also supervising edi-
tor of Hollywood Magee a former
student in the University of Oklahoma
was employed in the Los Angeles
United Press bureau and on the Holly-
wood Citizen News before he joined
the staff of Hollywood
Charles H Cowles former publisher
of the LeFlore County Sun Poteau
and staff member of the McAlester
News-Capital is recovering from an
illness which attacked him in January
He is a patient in the U S Veterans'
hospital at Muskogee
Closing Date for Registration Set For
March 27 Blight Experts To
Be Instructors
With 30 persons registered on March
19 the enrolment for the short course
in news and pictorial photography to
be held at the University of Oklahoma
April 1 2 and 3 probably will reach
the maximum of 125 persons who can
be accommodated A Clarence Smith
director has announced
The deadline for registration in the
coursa believed to be the first of its
- kind ever held is March 27
To be sure of being allowed to at-
tend prospective students should
register by that date Smith said
Darkroom facilities of the school of
journalism sponsor of the course will
not permit an attendance of more than
125
Well-Known Men on Staff
The registration fee of $5 should be
sent at the same time as the enrolment
blank Smith said
- Eight well-known photographers will
serve as instructors and lecturers dur-
ing the course
Jack Price veteran newspaper and
syndicate photographer who now oper-
ates the Jack Price Picture Service in
New York City heads the instructional
staff Price conducts the newspaper
photography department of Editor and
Publisher
Life magazine is sending William
Vandivert one of its staff photograph-
ers to cover the course
